My email to ITV:
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express my disgust and utter exasperation at the incredible incompetence shown by your channel ITV HD last night, the 12th of June, during the opening England match of the World Cup. As you are well aware viewers of this channel missed the one and only England goal because of an "interruption". I'm afraid I find this interruption unacceptable by any broadcaster who feels they are capable of effectively transmitting what are, by anyone's standards, events of national significance. What makes your error even more astonishing and infuriating is that you made exactly the same mistake during the FA Cup tie between Everton and Liverpool in 2009. As both an employer and a parent I would suggest that in any situation where the same horrendous mistake is made twice I would not allow the perpetrator the responsibility to continue in the position that allowed the error in the first place. As such I very much hope that you are forcibly or voluntarily relieved of any duty you may feel you have to televise any of the remaining England fixtures in the 2010 World Cup. I'm very sure that you are completely aware that your mistake could not have been made on the BBC, and as a publicly owned corporation I have no doubt that it certainly would not have been made twice.
This year there has been a concerted push by all the major broadcasters to introduce high definition television, in particular for your World Cup coverage. Having bought an HD satellite receiver solely to watch football I now find that I cannot watch your HD channel for fear that the coverage will suffer yet another "interruption".
I would finally like to point out that the weak, almost humorous apology offered by Adrian Chiles at half time did nothing to assuage the anger and resentment that I and many others have towards a broadcaster who spoiled an event to which the nation had been looking forward for four years.
I look forward to your response.
ITV's response:
Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding HD viewing of the England v USA World Cup football match.
An error by ITV’s transmission providers, Technicolor, meant that ITV1 HD’s coverage of the England v USA match was interrupted for approximately 20 seconds. ITV1’s standard definition coverage was unaffected.
ITV immediately investigated this issue and a preliminary report has indicated that the cause of the problem was human error at Technicolor, in London. ITV's Sport production team in South Africa, who have produced high quality coverage throughout the tournament, were in no way responsible.
Richard Cross, Group Technology Director, ITV plc said: “We apologise unreservedly to viewers for the unacceptable interruption to high definition coverage of the match. We met with Technicolor first thing this morning to put in place measures to address the issue and to ensure that Technicolor takes the appropriate action with immediate effect."
May I take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to contact us here at ITV as we always welcome viewers’ feedback

If ITV making a boo boo is really winding people up so badly, they dont know how lucky they are not to have something to really worry about, like ill health or severe money worries etc etc0

OK, so it was irritating at the time and I did my own share of swearing but it wasn't as if anybody actually missed the goal altogether.
It was merely delayed by a few seconds until the replay was aired!0
