Nobody's saying you can't find it annoying! But telling a country not to indulge in what for them is part of watching football is downright rude. And people who use phrases like 'Culture Police' would be quick to complain if someone from SA or elsewhere came over here and told us what we couldn't do at public events. You can;t have it both ways. It IS part of the atmosphere over there, so annoying to you or not, it's going to happen.0

quote: ....Vuvuzela apologists -- a few more weeks of this brainless white noise will perhaps change, or melt, their minds -- defend the din as simply part of the South African experience. Each country to its own, they say. When in Rome, blah, blah, blah. Get with the par-tee and blow, man.
Which would be fine if this was purely a South African competition. Fans could then legitimately hoot away to their hearts' content while annoying no one other than their immediate neighbours.
But this is the World Cup, a celebration of the 32 nations that qualified and all that did not, but still play and love the game. Hosting planet soccer brings responsibilities. At the very least, South Africa should ensure that the hundreds of millions of visitors who come in goodwill to its door, both in person and via the magic of television, do not go home with a migraine...0 -
Oh dear, the pious are truly among us still. It is NOT like banning the Haka.....it would be if the during the course of a whole game the NZ crowd constantly did the Haka. As for this spurious Cultural Imperialism argument, for that is what is being alluded to, nonsense.
Once again, thank you lalique for putting us all right (You said it, banned by the RUGBY FU, not SAFA- SA FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION. Your argument in this respect is pretty much null & void). Actually, how does this make my argument null and void? Oh, that's right, because I am a football fan who happens to express an opinion that doesn't cohere with your own, oh, right, I get it. Where spurious cultural links are made there can be no difference of opinion. Just like FIFA who are considering banning the Vvz at forthcoming games. Actually that makes me uncomfortable also, whilst i said ban it, that was simply me having a grumpy Sunday morning, i am for free speech and expression, including my right to moan about how the sound of that bloody horn is ruining the world cup atmosphere. (Note to non football fans, you can usually hear cheering and singing at games).
Anyway, could the Culture Police please post a reply telling me here I am wrong, and what I, and most other people, should be thinking, so kind of you.
Well, I'm in SA right now having a whale of a time. Glad to report, no headache or migraine so far.0 -

I think it is very annoying and i understand its so called part of the culture in S Africa but what about celebrating every other countries culture thats taking part as well... The world cup is not just about the host country or their annoying habits
They should just do it on their own games!. Maybe tactics are involved with it all, this comment was on Sky news about it all "In the wake of his team's 1-1 draw with Mexico in the opening game, South Africa captain Aaron Mokoena described the noise as "our 12th man that we need ... our weapon"."

I agree with you 100%. It's not the 'South Africa Cup', it's the 'World Cup' and they are merely temporary custodians of the competition. The noise is atrocious, has no relationship to events on the field and is just a horrible constant racket. Broadcasters, players and fans are all complaining about it.
It has the potential to spoil the whole competition, and could even get worse as we get into the later stages. By all means let them do it during their domestic games but FIFA and the Stadium Authorities should do something to ensure the rest of the world can enjoy it.
I don't care if it is part of the culture. Pitch invasions, mass fighting and drunken disordliness used to be part of the English football culture (maybe still are) but that doesn't mean we have to put up with it.0
