OKay, what I don't like (or rather miss) is the rival (friendly so far) fans trying to out do each other. I'm not averse to the Vv per se, particularly at Sth Africa gmes, but it really does seem to have taken away from the atmosphere. It rather reminds me of when loads of people used to bring air horns to games, and that was bloody annoying too.
As for the games so far, pretty boring really, although..C'mon Ghana, played well, attractive, positive football.
As for commentators, Motty is OK, but yes, the rest of them........0 -
When in Rome.....
This is the South African World Cup. Accept it.
Even join in. My kids love their vuvuzelas!0 -

"As for the spurious cultural argument, I wouldn't be too happy listening to the jingle of bells or thwacks of sticks at Wembley as 80,000 people do the MorrisMan dance either."
That's a strawman argument - this doesn't actually happen, now, does it? A better analogy would be banning the Haka. As a poster said above, if supporters from other nations were telling England fans to ban chants or banners people would be whinging on about 'political correctness gone maaaaad'. The tournament is taking place in SA. It's part of SA football culture. Therefore, it would be pretty damned rude if they weren't allowed to toot their own horn!
I'd personally love one but, being Scouse, can't touch anything the Sun has had a hand in0 -
Thank you Lalique for putting us mere mortals right, we are so ignorant. Anyway, now I know why the bloody horns are BANNED BY THE SOUTh AFRICAN RFU, Yes, you are not allowed them into rugby matches because they spoil the atmosphere.

It is nothing to do with being ignorant of cultural sensibility and everything to do with the love of football....
You said it, banned by the RUGBY FU, not SAFA- SA FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION. Your argument in this respect is pretty much null & void.0 -
I'm so pleased that people's ignorance has been dispelled over the Vuvuzela seeing as it has a rich cultural history in south africa dating back eons to at least the 1990's when according to Boogieblast, a South African distributor, who say that the plastic horn first arrived here from the United States as a children’s toy.
Oops that kind of puts a dampner on the patronising guff above :money:
Lol, you quite obviously missed the point! Never mind, it was a long shot expecting everyone to get it.

The vuvuzela has sod all to to with the Kudo horn (link) but who am I to tell a nation that blowing a horn is annoying? As long as the 'cheap plastic chinese horn designed in the US' stays in Africa and doesn't come to this country that will be enough for me.0

Let the South africans use them at their matches BAN them at all others, IMO it is ruining this world cup, its like having a swarm of bees buzzing round your head for 90 minutes 3 times a day0

I'd much rather hear the vuvuzela than listen to 90mins of that $$$$wit with a bell at Portsmouth games!0 -
Oh dear, the pious are truly among us still. It is NOT like banning the Haka.....it would be if the during the course of a whole game the NZ crowd constantly did the Haka. As for this spurious Cultural Imperialism argument, for that is what is being alluded to, nonsense.
Once again, thank you lalique for putting us all right (You said it, banned by the RUGBY FU, not SAFA- SA FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION. Your argument in this respect is pretty much null & void). Actually, how does this make my argument null and void? Oh, that's right, because I am a football fan who happens to express an opinion that doesn't cohere with your own, oh, right, I get it. Where spurious cultural links are made there can be no difference of opinion. Just like FIFA who are considering banning the Vvz at forthcoming games. Actually that makes me uncomfortable also, whilst i said ban it, that was simply me having a grumpy Sunday morning, i am for free speech and expression, including my right to moan about how the sound of that bloody horn is ruining the world cup atmosphere. (Note to non football fans, you can usually hear cheering and singing at games).
Anyway, could the Culture Police please post a reply telling me here I am wrong, and what I, and most other people, should be thinking, so kind of you.0
