    Prognosis.

Not too worried whether you find it impressive or not. Or whether you believe it or not.

I do currently work as an NHS consultant and the advice was sensible.

You make a valid point - no one can trust anyone posting something on the internet.

Perhaps we should just close all advice forums down?

If you read my post I wasnt offering medical advice, which would be wrong, merely giving my opinion on the OP's condition

You offered a medical opinion AND prognosis on a person only known to you through the typed word, and then you qualified that prognosis with your revelation of medical qualifications. All in all, I'd say that was a pretty poor show. Or do the NHS offer distance consultations by mail now? No? Thought not.

    Neither.

I work as an NHS consultant in East Anglia.

I dont recall making any assumptions.

    Medicine isnt an exact science.

The advice was general advice based on the most likely outcome.

Again, not losing sleep if you doubt me.

    Wee Willy Harris,

Of course I offered my opinion - thats what everyone does on these forums. I did NOT claim that I was medically qualified in my OP. Only when someone claimed my post was without foundation!

I simply said the OP COULD well be feeling much better in a few short weeks. What, exactly is wrong with that!

In general, this condition is very treatable.

I offered no advice SPECIFIC to this individual.

I cannot see for the life of me what is such a 'poor show' about that

I thought it was usual for the medical profession to wait for a diagnosis before predicting treatment outcomes. Isn't that the way it works?

    Yes it is.

Was just offering some advice as the OP's predicted diagnosis as the osteomalacia thread happened to catch my eye.

So, we have the undiagnosed condition of a complete stranger you've never met and only read as much as the average postcard about, and from that you can confidently say that....

"Not so that you can now claim benefits but so that you can commence the correct treatment, recover & work hard at finding a job"

"It is not a condition that will prevent you from working."

And you guys tell us that you DON'T perform miracles?

Person A - vulnerable? Mental health issues? LD? (but this is the internet so you don't know that)
Person B - random stranger on the internet

Person A - oh I'm not feeling well. I've got XYZ. What benefits can I claim?
Person B - Oh don't worry. XYZ is treatable, you'll recover and go on to find work. It won't prevent you from working (ignoring the benefits question) Trust me! I'm a Dr!
Person A - Oh thats great!

Person A doesn't feel better. In fact they feel worse but don't do anything about it because person B told them they would be ok. They assume this is normal. Person B said he/she was a Dr so they must be right....

Can you not see why you shouldn't give advice (ie it's treatable) nor your opinion (it won't prevent you from working, you'll recover)?

Look - people with far worse vitamin deficiency problems walk 10 miles for water in some countries.

I was making the point that the mindset should be to get treatment, recover and try to find a job!!

The OP seemed to be delighted in finding a 'name' for her condition and appeared to be interested in what benefits she could now claim.

I feel you are clutching at straws to knock me down.

I offered my advice, you dont agree - fair enough

I'm not the only one who doesn't agree. Pop over to the Health, Beauty and Fashion board and there is this advice from MSE....

    What it is for

This board is a discussion of all issues surrounding health, diet, nutrition and how they relate to MoneySaving. Discussing medical insurance policies, cheaper ways to see consultants, cashback for alternative health treatments, how to get specific medication cheaper (legally) are all perfectly acceptable forms of discussion.

    What it is not for

It is very specifically and strictly not for the discussion of what to do in the event of certain medical problems. Please do not ask questions about this. If you're having problems use facilities such as NHS direct and your doctor to go and talk through what you should do.

Even though there are medically qualified people sometimes visiting these forums, I would ask them to restrain from answering specific medical questions.

Even though you know you are medically qualified, others don't. There is no way of proving it and this leads us open to somebody coming on, pretending to be a doctor when they're not and giving advice.

As such it is very important there is a blanket rule that nobody no matter who (not even Robert Winston) should be giving any form of medical advice or detailing what to do on these boards.

    What mental health issues?

Come on - shouldnt give positive advice - give over.

What about saying to people on these forums that are a few million in debt 'not to worry, we all were there once, you will be ok etc'

    Is that wrong as well.

I offered some extremely positive, sensible advice.

You are someone who disagrees and that is just fine.
