Royal Mail compensation - purchase or sale price?

Hi knowledgeable ebayers,
I've currently got an item listed which i originally paid £30 for several months ago but it's a limited edition item now not possible to get for that amount.
My auctions currently at £38

If royal mail were to lose it in the post what value would I be able to claim?

If it were to go above the £42 limit would it be worth upgrading the postage or would i only get the purchase price anyway?

I've got a question from an overseas buyer about what tax they'd have to pay to send to brazil and what value i will put on the customs declaration... should i be putting the cost or sale price on there?

Thanks

    Depends if your a business seller or not?
    business=purchase price
    personal=auction price

    If over £41 you need to send tracked with adequate insurance.

    Think carefully about expensive items going overseas, the postage will be enormous as you need a signed for service and proper insurance so will need a courier. The rM airmail services do not guarantee a signature so will not be of use for paypal.

    I know people on here who have got the purchase price, but I never tell them that, only the sale price and that's the money I get.

    How heavy is the item? If it's quite small, I would just send it small packet and write on the customs label t-shirt. Nobody will look at a used item in plain white packaging, however sending stuff signed for instantly says the contents are valuable take me. The cost of sending it ISF will outweigh any additional insurance paid out. However, if it's heavy and above £50 in value, send it with interparcel who usually offer a signature on delivery.

    Not a good idea to mis-declare items. Interparcel might offer good prices in the UK but no carrier will be cheap to Brazil.

    I'm not sure how a Brazilian customer expects you to be more knowledgeable about foreign customs charges than they are! I would just reply that they will need to check this out themselves.

    Thanks guys
    Feeling a bit apprehensive about sending abroad now.

    I put £13 postage for outside the UK incase i needed extra insurance. Is airsure ok for paypal?

    It's a makeup set about the size of a video casette and weighs about 350g i think. Yes i'm a private seller, didn't buy it to sell - just havent used it and decided it's not worth keeping.

    The only service RM offers is ISF.

    Brazil is included under Airsure
    You can send mail by Airsure® to 30 destinations in the following three geographic postal zones

    Europe: Andorra, Austria, Azores, Balearic Islands, Belgium, Canary Islands, Corsica, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Madeira, Monaco, Netherlands, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

    World Zones: Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand and USA

    Please note that if your country isn’t included in the above list, you can’t use our Airsure® service for your destination, although you can still send your item via International Signed For™.

    Wrong on so many levels. Weight and size are not linked. Something small is not necessarily lightweight, something large not necessarily heavy, either/neither may or may not be valuable.

    Always correctly id the customs value and description. A mascara (for instance) marked as a teeshirt will raise suspicions in any language. :cool:

    The cost of ISF or Airsure is only applicable if your item is over £41 in value, not £50. So you should decide if you require insurance over this amount as these services offer additional insurance but at a fee.

    If your item is under £41, you may decide to post with no added protection. Paying for additional protection will not necessarily assist in a claim if INR on PP as RM do not give ANY assurances for overseas mail to be fully tracked and they rarely show online as such.

    The only benefit of paying for an enhanced postal method is for value to you - and any subsequent RM claim.
