Sorry but I dont agree to take kids out of school for a holiday in term time. Yes I have kids too and wouldnt dream of it and have never done so not even once, I either pay extra to go in school holidays or if I cant afford it which is normally the case I stay at home as I am doing this year
  • Sorry I don't have time to read the whole 5 pages but just for my input, I have no children but about 5 years ago I worked in a school and was not allowed time off in term time. My OH booked Florida that same year for my birthday but didn't realise it had to be out of term time, the school asked me to choose my holiday or my job, when it came down to it I ended up losing the job. In hindsight it's the best thing that could have ever happened to me as I am now in a much better workplace but I don't recommend anybody doing this if they have responsibilities.

    blindly following rules ...
A man was appointed for guard duties in a temple. He used to sit on the gate of the temple and ensure that no one enter in the temple with shoes on. There was a board at the gate, "Please remove your shoes before entering in the temple." He enforced the rules with utmost sincerity.
A man came walking without shoes and tried to enter in the temple. The gatekeeper denied him the entry. "Why?" The man argued," I am not wearing any shoes. How can you deny me entry?"
"Read the rules. It requires that you have to first remove your shoes before entering in the temple. So please go home and wear a shoe, remove it here and then only you can enter in the temple." Came the reply from the gatekeeper.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

BargainGalore, I respect that is YOUR choice, YOUR decision, you are doing what you feel is right for your children & situation.

All I ask is that the schools respect MY decision, and graciously allow me to do what I believe is right for MY child & situation.

What's your justification for taking your children out of school during term time

So you dont mind your kids falling behind or then other kids suffer so your kids can catch up

They changed the rules because some parents were taking the Mick, quite frankly if you cant afford to go in term time then perhaps you shouldn't go

You have a choice pay extra, dont pay extra and break the law and let you kids suffer to. Education is more important than a family holiday abroad

But you don't have the right to make that decision, only the school does. It's you who should respect their right to say no.

You have the right to remove them from state school entirely and make other arrangements for their education, you don't have the right to dip them in and out of state school education as and when you feel like it.

The main reason as i see it is the fact that the travel industry feel the need to hike their prices up in school holidays! If the price could remain the same as termtime then people wouldn't take their kids out-simple fact. I also think that parents are fed up with living in a nannystate culture which dictates how we bring our kids up. As i have previously mentioned i cannot see any harm in taking YOUR kids on a week or maybe two week holiday abroad once a year providing that child/children have had good attendance all year.

As a school Governor I would never take my kids out of school ( for longer than a day) except at one specific time of year. The only time I would so is the last two weeks of term when they are doing very little in the way of academic work. I have taken them out for one day for family weddings/celebrations as I believe family time is very important.

My youngest son has always attended the graduation ceremonies of his older brothers (and hopefully will be doing so again in early July!) as I think this is a family occasion and illustrates the achievement of a goal to strive for. I have taken my older kids out a couple of times in the last two weeks of term, to save a lot of money when you consider the cost of a family holiday for 6.

If their attendance is good, and their academic record is as it should be, then missing the last two weeks of term to have the experience of travel is acceptable to me.
