So those of you who hate public sector workers would sack teaching assistants, nursery nurses, school cleaners? Do you think they don't deserve the wages they are paid? I was a teaching assistant and I can tell you its not a pleasant job and the money is not all that. What if you have a special needs child? Would you be okay if there was no longer a teaching assistant in their classroom? Because at the moment they are getting support but if all these cuts go ahead then the support will be cut. It will be the lower paid people who will suffer the most from this.

TAs should never have happened. More lower paid teachers. But then again, a teacher shouldnt be on a 40K salary. Nor should heads be on anywhere near the cash they are.

The special kid should go to special school and shouldnt burden a class full of achieving kids. Classes should be focussed on what the special kid is capable of achieving, not pretending that they can get the theory of relativity and integration by parts. Of course, if we are talking about cerebal palsy or some such disorder that doesnt limit them educationally, then fair game. But autistic kids that hold back a class of normal kids shouldnt be in the standard system. They are, quite simply a distraction to other kids that are being held back by the constant attention they require.

I am fine with a cull of wasteful public sector jobs - but not now. Canada did its cull with the economy in growth - surplus employees were able to transfer from non-productive public sector jobs into productive public sector jobs.

But what will happen with cuts here now? No private sector jobs to go into so what we'll do is take people from the employment list and pay them benefits. Yes, we save their salary. We then lose their economic spending of their spare cash, we pay them dole money, housing and council tax benefits, tax credits. Their decrease in spending puts people in the private sector out of work. We then pay them benefits and so on. The notion that we can save £6bn by putting people on the dole is laughable - it'll cost us most of that in lost tax revenues and benefit. And crash the economy putting yet more people out of work. Or we could do as the treasury mandarins reportedly advised Laws - do nothing. We cut £20bn off the deficit by growing the economy. They forecast a further £60bn off the deficit by reflating growth this financial year. Osborne will bin the £60bn of "cuts" by pushing through £6bn of ideological cuts.

We have a deficit because tax revenues fell off during the recession. We reflate the economy, we get the tax revenue back. Yes, we need to cut the structural deficit and tax revenues won't recover all the way. But the bulk of the deficit will disappear in the same way it appeared - economic activity. Threaten the recovery and we really are screwed.

Most of those benefits wont exist rochdale. They will all get cut. Furthermore, not only will be save on the salary, we also save on long term benefits such as pensions.

We need to cut loose those that who arent productive. We also need to stop paying benefits to economic migrants and get them to go home. We then get former admin CS picking spuds in farmers fields for minimum wage and get them doing something productive.

I'm possibly the last person you will find supporting our presence in Afghanistan. I remain unconvinced on the genuine motives for being there.

But I will never begrudge the modest sums paid to our professional armed forces staff, especially the ones out there risking their sheer existence.

In the US returning soldiers get welcomed in every restaurant, discounts in every cinema or theatre.

The fact we don't do the same is nothing short of a disgrace.

I know it is only a film but I thought the basis of the Rambo films were that they were not respected when they came home, then maybe it all changed when the public saw that film icon7.gif

The one that sticks in my mind was Born on the 4th of July.

That was notable on 2 counts :- a strong mood change in the film; and Tom Cruise in a good film! ;)

Perhaps, but it is a valid argument. My high school was a halfway house between these two positions. We had a special needs unit where disabled kids had specialist teachers and facilities. They would do some lessons there as a group, and some as part of the main school.

With respect to the alleged offence, a child with special educational needs and disabilities can be a major disruption to a class. You have to balance off their needs with those of everyone else.

I'm sorry but this comment has made me speechless, but I'll give it a go anyhow.

The Military can't strike, can't take any time of industrial action or threaten to take such action.

Civil servants in uniform? Try calling your local councillor in at 4 in the morning, send them somewhere hot and sandy and inform their partners they won't be back for 6 months. Try telling the CSs partners that they have to move homes up to 12 times in a 22yr career.

These Military personnel give their time and lives for their country, not go and sit behind a desk and claim allowances for it.

You've really just made yourself look like the complete t""t you are.

  • If everyone could get an A grade then there would be no point in having exams.

The reality is that a teacher is one of many factors that can affect childrens' achievement. Someone may have a fantastic teacher, but still not do as well as they could due to illness/family problems/lack of revision at home/parents took them on holiday during exams etc. etc. Equally some children have poor teachers but still do well in exams, due to other positive influences on their lives such as parents suporting them to do homework, purchasing revision guides, money spent on tuition etc.

So it is really a difficult area to assess. There is actually performance related pay for teachers to an extent, based on their classes as a whole making above average progress. I'll leave the more sensible here to imagine what teaching teenagers would be like if they thought they could get your pay cut if they did less work and messed about more!!

I don't agree with many of WH comments, but in the main I'm a big advocate of performance related pay.

In this example, you wouldn't just have a rise or bonus based on the number of A grades, but on the increase / decrease over prior year.

So if in a poorly performing school the % of A* to C increased from 28 to 31%, that may be considered a good result, but in a top school, dropping from 98 to 95% would be a bad result.

The risk is that this then diverts away from anything but the grade, but then isn't that true now anyway?

    Just my opinion!
