Router wise ... not much diff. Go with a linksys, belkin or netgear, they're all big players. Sometimes you might get a wireless adaper for your PC for free like with some PC World deals.
I just looked for you, this one looks cool for the price.

Only 4"
PS Sign up ASAP .... broadband sign ups can take weeks to install, especially large ISPs and cable (cable requires an engineer if no box already there)..... many leave it until all the students are in and settled ... then have to wait up to a month for it to arrive.
Thanks again for your time and effort to help me!
If i sign up now can i choose a day that i want them to come round or will they just decide themselves?
im quite happy to sign up and then get it installed mid september when we all start to arrive in the house..
I know my house mates very well so signing up and payment etc is no problem, just need to confirm that they are happy with £25 a month for cable broadband.. i guess thats cheap right? just for broadband that is..
and by the way, does that router work with cable broadband and how do you know if one does? thanks:)
ps. i swear ntl and telewest are the same company?!0 -
It might be wise to let your landlord know?
and yes that router will work with cable cos it says so!

Its np .... I get loads of advice from other boards and I feel inclined to offer some tech advice to keep the flow of knowledge exchange going
You may be able to choose the engineer attend time if you phone up ... I think perhaps cable engineer vists are more flexible then an ADSL activation date, done remotely.
All the "broadband routers" on the market are suitable for Cable/DSL (ADSL) as they have the right sockets for either broadband type. However if one is labelled just ADSL Router, it is because it has an integrated ADSL modem in it, to save the buyer from having to connect an ADSL modem to it ... these ones tend to be £55+ and are not suitable for you. As far as I am aware because NTL and Telwest loan their customers a specific cable modem, there are no/very few built in cable modem routers on the UK market.
The items one ebuyer.com or pcworld.co.uk clearly state in the description of all their routers whether its suitable for ADSL and cable. The PC World site even has a very large cable logo next to all their cable related products
£25 for 4mb unlimited broadband is very good. The best ADSL deal for us BT dependant people is AOL which is about a tenner a month for 2Mb .... however we are stuck paying £10.50 a month to BT.
Your getting double speed for an extra fiver. Some advice to tell you flatties when you're all moved in .... no longer than 5 minute downloading when others are using the internet for work because it really slows down beyond dialup speeds. You'll notice that when someone is downloading music or something else!
Telewest and NTL merged yup ... Telewest bought out Eurobell in the South West too so its all one happy family now ... but it seems for now that they are still running their own websites and orders.0 -

Once again greyster, thank you so much for your help! You've saved me a good few quid in internet costs, saved me time looking for routers and also time spent researching all this!
I'm gonna take a look at a few routers then report back with my findings and see if you approve!!

Yes. Don't forget to look for a code and use quidco. I think this deal is available across currys and dixons too should you find a code for them.
I wouldn't say you are getting the card free, if bought a wireless G router for cable of any good brand + card, it would work out at about this price.
Can't go wrong with Belkin mind ... free support number and they replaced my power cable for free.
They couriered me a new power cable/plug within 3 days when my other one died after 18 months.0 -
