Need a phone line installed..

if you can get cable broadband ... you can make voice calls on broadband using software such as skype.com or buy a VOIP box so you can plug a normal phone into it and use it while the PC is off.
So ... why pay £30 for bulldog plus connection fee.
If you are in a cable area and don't really need a BT line you are lucky ... thousands of us are stuck paying BT line rental ...... go go go.0 -
don't get me wrong greyster i completely agree with you..
i was just confused as to whether firstly when you refer to cable you are talking about NTL/Telewest and secondly if i buy broadband from Telewest will they install it for me without the need for a telephone line at all?
Thanks,
nalibz:)0 -
Yes, cable is different from ADSL in that it doesn't come down the phone line and be split, its a separate cable that comes into the house direct

and yes cable is Telewest/NTL0 -

thanks! that sounds brilliant.
I'm going to buy the package which is 3 months @ £12.50 and then 9 months @ £25 for 4Mb broadband.
If anyone advises anything else ie. better cable options (if there are any) please let me know!!
thanks again for all your help, has been extremely useful!

yes i am sharing the house with 5 other people and we are planning on getting a wireless router... Could you recommend any suitable for cable?
thanks:)0 -
Can't recommend any as I don't have cable but there are loads of threads in the Techie board regarding wireless routers and setting them up that should help. However, its like everything else everyone has their favourite manufacturer and while some people will say Netgear is great the next poster will suggest Linksys is best

There is a good offer on at PCW at the moment for a Linksys one in a package with a laptop card but its no use for cable users.
I did help friends set up wireless with cable a while ago and managed to get a Buffalo router through a deal at PCW for £30 which did the job fine but I think it was end of stock.0 -

thanks! I'll have to take a look on the techie board and im sure i'll find something on there..
then you're invited round to mine [STRIKE]to set up the router [/STRIKE]for a coffee!0 -
nalibz .... NTL andTelwest are on quidco. Make sure you use it.
NTL £27.50 cashback
Telewest £40 cashback
Router wise ... not much diff. Go with a linksys, belkin or netgear, they're all big players. Sometimes you might get a wireless adaper for your PC for free like with some PC World deals.
I just looked for you, this one looks cool for the price.

Only 4"
PS Sign up ASAP .... broadband sign ups can take weeks to install, especially large ISPs and cable (cable requires an engineer if no box already there)..... many leave it until all the students are in and settled ... then have to wait up to a month for it to arrive.0
