Hey guys,

Just a quick question about phone lines because i really dont have a clue!

Basically this coming september im moving into a house for the start of the next university year. However unfortunately my house doesnt have a phone line installed therefore my questions are..

1) How do i go about getting a phone line installed?
2)How much does it cost?
3)If i dont actually want a phone but only want a phone line installed in order to use the internet is there a better/cheaper option?
3)Is it the landlords responsibility for a landline to be installed?

Thanks for all your help!!

nalibz:)

No its not the landlords responsibility.

If there is a damaged one on site from years ago, you may get BT to fix it for free. If there isnt one, than you'll likely to pay around £100.... (not exact).

If you only want it for net access, perhaps you want to check out cable broadband .... cheaper install.... and you dont need to pay for the cable telephone service if you dont want it.

If you dont have cable ... then you may have to accept the BT installation charge.

You may also want to scan the neighbourhood for wireless networks ... perhaps park outside and scan with a laptop. See if there are any unsecure ones .... or secure ones that are named in such a way that you know where they are and can perhaps contact them and ask to share their internet for a price.

For cable ... you go to Telewest or NTL's (merged now but still diff sites?) website and see if you can get it with their postcode checker.

For BT... phone 150 from any BT landline/payphone (free).

The problem is that the only reason we want a phone line connection is so that we can access the internet..

We dont want to make any calls from a landline just purely have phone line for internet use..

If this is the case what are the options? The house im moving into doesnt have a phone line currently but i think it may have had at some point so i can probably get it reconnected for free its just that i dont want to have to pay £13 a month for a phone i wont use.

If theres no other options then fair enough but if anyone has any ideas help!!

    thanks!

    It's pretty much two options.

Cable Broadband (you only pay for broadband, no cable/BT telephone needed).
Wireless (requires a scan as previously stated).

You got satellite broadband but more costly then enabling BT line.

You also have the university computer rooms ... which tend to be open to very late. Good if your close.

£11 (BT Together Option 1 payable by Direct Debit).

If the area doesn't have NTL/Telewest cable, a BT landline is your only option for getting broadband AFAIAA.

    Thanks for all your replies...

The cable broadband option sounds good as this is really all i want and i take it when you say cable you are talking about NTL/Telewest... I've also been looking at different sites and i've found Bulldog who will provide a landline and internet (8mb-unlimited) for £30 per month (plus £99 connection fee), although this seems quite expensive..

    ps. Edinburghlass - i lurrrrrrrrrve BT;) :D

I think Bulldog (Cable & Wireless) has ceased private installations now - see HERE and HERE.
