Isn't it great when you gather the strength to pick up the phone and find another human being at the other end?

I had the same experience with a lovely lady at Virgin (MBNA) in the early days of my finance problems. She was very sympathetic and kept calling me 'pet' but she was a geordie so it was to be expected :D I'm sure some people who don't have enough to moan about would find it offensive, but she was basically giving me a great big cuddle down the phone line when it was needed most :)

  • I was just wondering if your original total debts are £15,000? This may prevent CCCS or Payplan helping you. If I remember rightly, your debt had to total that or more in order for them to step in. That is the only reason I can think of for them to advise you to pay minimum amounts.
Please tell us how this works out because if you owe at least £22,000 then one of these companies should be helping to sort it?

    I wish you well,

    ttf

Thank you for this. My debts do indeed total about £22000. There's no way my wife and I are settling to pick up normal contractual commitments- that would leave us with no life. To be fair, I can afford a significant amount more than I was paying on my failed DMP.

But what's the point of life when all you're paying for is the essentials and paying off debt? that's not a life. I want to clear this debt off, I really do. I'm not extravagant- I don't smoke, or hardly drink, and we don't have extravagant holidays. I expect to make sacrifices, but when the car has a repair bill, and I can't find a couple of hundred quid to sort it out, I'm, well, stuffed.

Sorry if I sound like a rant. I'm not feeling very well this weekend, and this site is, to be blunt, keeping me a little more buoyant.

Evening all, hope everyone is well!

With regards having a life, and being beholden to debt, I'm curious to know what having a life should be defined as, as that definition is surely different to some people.

My life has changed beyond all recognition after starting my DMP, I've lost weight, learnt how to cook, stopped drinking regularly, and appreciate money a hell of a lot more!

I've met (another) lovely lady, who I think is the one, and after a few dates had pretty much told each other everything there is to know about each other. I told her how much debt I was in a few weeks ago, and though she was shocked, did think I was in a lot worse before I'd told her!

She has two kids, and is a single mum, and is skint herself, so I think we make a right pair, and want to spend time together. I'd love to fuss over her, but I can't always afford it, but tbh I think it'd be all material to her, and just wants us to be together.

So.... we don't currently have 'a life' per se going out, spending money having fun etc, but we keep ourselves entertained in other ways. And for those with dirty minds, I don't mean like that!

Just curious to know what other's thoughts are with regards having a life.

well shock horror m + s have accepted the previous payments but only for another three months strange outfit

think i am about to go into my first dca with capital one got a letter yesterday stating my account is now officially in default. then the usual speel and number 4.

"we may place your account with, or sell your account to a debt collections agency, which may use door-to-door collectors or begin legal proceedings to recover all sums owed to us"

Our nominated representative will contact you shortly

I hope this is just a scare tactic? i have had it upto here with capital one anyway they took the longest to accept my dmp and never really acknowledged it was in place the total debt with them is £1128.63 there wouldnt be a door to door collection for this amount would there?

thanks again i also presume there is no point paying them there £20 odd quid this month as they wont be accepting it

    thanks

Great post, and food for thought!

To be perfectly honest- I'll need to have a think about this one- it's been so long since I've felt comfortable with things financial, I don't really know. I suppose having a life to me would be paying all the bills and having enough each month for a cinema trip, a meal, and to have a fun activity with the little un. I'm sure if I draw this down, I'll have a different answer. I would mirror Ian's query mind- what do other people perceive as having a life?

When you say reject, did they return the payment then?

Just carry on paying the amount each month to each creditor regardless. You must show that you are committed to paying, as any little excuse and the creditor will come down on you hard. If it ever comes to court you have to have shown willing and commitment to paying at all times, and hopefully that will serve you well.

What a lovely post. Pleased for you on the romance front Ian, onwards and upwards.

Dating on a DMP is a real challenge as I've always had and always will insist on paying my own way. Can be challenging always trying to come up with how about we go for a walk instead of going to the theatre etc! Then again the best things in life are free. Yes I'm one of the ones with the dirty mind, lol.

Like you I've done a lot of reevaluating and some aspects of life are for the better for sure. Money's too much of a focus for my liking just now, I guess that will settle and a neccesary part of being on a DMP to get through the month. Before DMP I didn't think about it so much, I'm not materialistic, couldn't understand where it was going. Now I realise how much was accidentally leaking because of the lack of focus, then exhorbitant interest rates, grrrr, well that's something of the past I can assure you. I wouldn't say I have learn't to cook proper but I'm defo upskilling!

Some aspects are tough but then again in 5 weeks and 2 days I will be making my 12th DMP payment which will hopefully me being there 25% of the way. The alternative makes me shudder. If I'm loosing the will I think about plans for after, that cheers and motivates me no end. Current plan is to allow myself 27% of my DMP payment for me and the other 73% into overpaying my mortgage.

Anyway, spring is in the air and at least one of us has found a new love. Go for it:):T:):T:j

Hi i'm new to this site, have been on a dmp with payplan for 12 months now, all is going well we are just about to have our annual review. Anyway I have a question regarding my mortgage, we are currently with Northern Rock on a fixed rate which is due to end in July we will then go onto the standard variable rate. We cannot re-fix our mortgage with northern rock and if we want a fixed mortgage we have been told that we would need to re-mortgage is this possible whilst on a dmp?
