Came home today to a porch full of mail. Mainly from cooperative bank telling me to call them to discuss repayment options and to return my debit card and cheque book. Lots of threats of impact on credit file (errr, I know! :).. and telling me all about the disadvantages of me losing premier account bundle perks. Also a default from Santander.

I just filed them in my DMP folder, will return cheque book etc. It was the coop's bank charges resulting from going OD by a couple of pound that really broke the camel's back. I feel such anger towards them.

I can understand your anger Squirrel! Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems banks are particularly unpleasant in situations such as we find ourselves in. Their bank charges are shocking. Yet are far too quick to offer credit aren't they?!

You've come so far though and you're doing well, remember that. Take care Squirrel x

I did not think phone companies checked your credit rating. I get my phones from Dialaphone and on their website it clearly states no credit checks. My understanding is if you don't pay you will be disconnected.

    Hope this has helped.

    Hi Mikon

I've always been quite positive that they do credit checks before you can take out a mobile phone contract, to make sure you can keep up with the monthly payments. I think just getting a phone alone you'll be fine, but if you take out a monthly contract, you will be subject to a credit check. There's no other reason I would've been turned down too. I think dialaphone would be the same. Just getting a phone, you'll be fine, but taking out a monthly contract with them, they will do credit checks.
Luckily for me, my husbands got a better credit rating than me! :o

The Co-op's charges do seem really high...

  • Hi all

We're just in the process of setting up our DMP and have today had a letter from Capital One, telling us they're unable to process our request (not sure what request, we sent a token payment and notification of starting a DMP) because we didn't sign the letter.

After reading some advice on here I just printed signatures.

I'm inclined to ignore it, as they'll hear off the CCCS anyway. Does anyone have any advice on what is best to do?

    Thanks in advance x

Ignore it. They don't need a signature.
  • I haven't heard anything from capital one for ages re my account (credit card), haven't had a statement or anyhting for at least six months, anyone know how often they have to send one?
  • Well, we started the DMP process in October, first payment made Dec 1st. We have around 20 creditors, the nightmares to deal with have been:
    * Barclays Partner Finance and Barclaycard - complete incompetence and just denial that they've received any paperwork (sent three times now). Still charging interest and default charges of way more than our small monthly payments to them.
    * Argos - incompetence / denial
    * MBNA - they said straight away that they would not accept our offers. All we have had since are the repeated statements with % and defaults charged.
Everyone else has been great - most particularly Halifax, Cap One, Mint. I found the people at these places really easy to talk and happy to explain the process etc. I would say that overall the creditors haven't been that scary to deal with.
I would also say that we're less stressed by the debt and it feels in control (although huge).
But we are finding our DMP incredibly hard to live on, really, really tough. We are now selling the last bits and pieces we can as we need to just to eat. This is scary particularly as our DMP goes on for years and years.
I did have a question that someone I'm sure could help with - I am currently job-hunting and feeling optimistic about working soon, when I do get work will the amount that we are left to live on on the DMP effectively remain the same and everything I earn go straight to the DMP?

    Hi
You've done well so far. :)
With regard to your budget. Have you ensured you've remembered to include ALL your financial commitments when working out how much you have left to live on? It's very easy to overlook something.
If you are with a DMP company I should ask for a review, to ensure you have a realistic amount to live on.
I struggle on my budget sometimes, but I suppose I am deliberately keeping it strict, because my DMP repayment is so low and want to repay.
When you get your job, hopefully you will have got your living budget sorted and can then up your payments (and see that DFD reduce :))
    Good Luck!

    Hi All,

I have had my 'lightbulb moment' after receiving a letter from MBNA about the increase in minimum payments from 1st April.

I plucked up the courage to call MBNA who were actually very sympathetic and suggested a DMP to reduce my payments. I have read as much as I can about the plans.

My question is I have an overdraft of £2000 with my bank (I don't dip into it, it is there purely as a "just in case measure" as I am a carer to my elderly parents). If I enter a DMP with MBNA will my current bank (not affiliated with MBNA) withdraw my overdraft, as in will MBNA inform them that I have entered into a plan?

Any advice would be much appreciated (apart from the non-sympathetic peeps on the forum).

    Many Thanks
