Overnight stay on way to Cornwall

Hi,

We normally stay overnight in Plymouth, arriving late on the Friday before our holiday begins to avoid the worst of the traffic.

On previous trips we have stayed in Travel Inns/ Travelodges & Novotel & all have been fine for the one night.

Our problem is that our oldest son is now 16 & although we are happy to all bunk down together we seem to be stuck with having to book two rooms.

Has anyone got any suggestions for places to stay on the main routes, with a late check-in & no restrictions on ages of children in rooms.

Or are we just being unrealistic???

    Hi Polly,

Where are you travelling from and which part of Cornwall are you heading for?

How many other children do you have ?

The Travelodge T & C allow for either 2 adults and 2 children (under 16) or 3 adults and one child in their family rooms, so if you've legitimately stayed in one room in the past, then I can't see that the fact that the eldest is now over 16 should be a problem ....

    True27,

We're travelling from Oxfordshire & heading for Mousehole (Penzance).

    p00hsticks,

We have one other son aged 12. Thanks for letting me know about the Travelodge, I obviously hadn't read their T&C properly. We've switched from them in the last few years as we've found that the Premier Inns offer better quality accommodation. I'll have a look at what's available.

Plymouth is a bit off the main route there, have you thought about the Travelodge in Okehampton which is right off the A30? Alternatively, there is also a Travelodge in Hayle now, which is only about 45 mins from Mousehole (and close to a lovely beach) and it's right next door to a Premier Inn too! It really depends whether you're trying to break up your journey or add an extra night to your holiday really!

We usually stay at Plymouth to break up the journey & so we can cross over the Tamar Bridge! It's a bit of a family tradition to cheer as we pass the Welcome to Cornwall sign!!
It's also a reasonable drive from home & lets us have a leisurely start to the Saturday while still staying ahead of the queues.
I know the Hayle Travelodge/Premier Inn but don't want to travel that far. I'll check out the Okehampton Travelodge.

As you are probably aware the deal with premier inn is you can only fit 2 adults and 2 kids under the age of 16 in the room. Who's to say your son isn't under the age of 16? are they really going to check up on it? is it anyone's business anyway?

If you stay on the A30 there is also a "Cornwall" sign just after Okehampton! Wouldn't want you to miss out on the fun :D hope you have a lovely time down here wherever you decide to stay x

Glad it's not just us that do that

We travel from the west mids & always set off around 4 am arriving in Looe around 10 ish including a good break at a services for breakfast.

I never see any serious traffic until it doesn't matter & the getting up very early kind of adds to the holiday feeling, my kids love it :)

It also saves on hotel bills for the Friday night!

I know the Royal Fleet Hotel does family rooms with a double room that has an adjoining bunk room for kids aged 4-16.I think the reception is fully manned 24 hours too and they will let you in late (probably need to discuss that with them though).Has views of the Tamar too :)

Not sure what price range you're looking for but having just looked at the website it's £70 for the family room including breakfast for the adults then an extra £10 for each child in the adjoining bunk room.

Wouldn't be too far off track to get back on the way to cross the bridge too -it's not too far from me and I live on the banks of the river and walk to the bridge when a little merry so I can tell everyone I walked to Cornwall:o:rotfl::rotfl:

Should add, that a relative has stayed there previously in family room with 16 1/3 year old son and younger son with no problems.

    bit pricier than travelodge though!

The sign is actually just before Launceston on the river Tamar. Okehampton is miles away and well into Devon. :p
