Just a comment here really! The security company we use here at the College all get issued with the new 3 pot Skoda Fabia (same as the polo Bluemotion engine?) and it came in the College carpark and as it drove past all I could think about was the noise and I murmered 'jeses has that thing dropped a cylinder?' and I realised - yes it had......'Just because its on the internet don't believe it 100%'. I have a 1998 Peugeot 306 D Turbo 1.9L, for that £65.00 i can get well over 600 miles and that's town, b road driving, nearer to 650 if motorway, the HDi's get even more and are cheap to buy and insure0

If the car is reliable and you want to keep it you might want to convert it to LPG.
It helps a lot if you have an LPG filling station close to home.
Luckily I do and the conversion was £1600.
For a new diesel, I saw a feature on the BMW 320d Efficiency Dynamics http://www.sytner.co.uk/bmw/coventry/about-us/news-and-events/dealer-news/the-1000-mile-bmw.aspx
At an average speed of 60mph over 1000 miles the car achieved 69mpg.
It won't have been a reallife test but i could probably get that sort of figure on my 100 miles a day to work and back.

For a trully valid answer the op needs to give more detail;
ie,
New?
Nearly new?
A few years old?
Trad diesel?
These cars are evolving rapidly, good today = crap tommorrow, or by the time you read this, yesterday,:eek::eek::eek:I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Any diesel car with DMF/DPF etc. are potential money pits outside warranty period.
Unless you do starship miles (20k+/year), you may be better of with economical petrol car.
Any 1.6-1.8 petrol car is competent on motorway and returns decent fuel economy.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -

But the otheside opf the view is that they don't, hence the diesel fans.
Buy a diesel car at the right price, ie, over mileage at near new, or under mileage at a fair few years old, (remember we don't have a clue to the OP's budget?), and you will be on to a winner, :money::money::money:I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
