Need an economical diesel car

Can anyone recommend a make and model of car which is diesel and does high mileage to the gallon/litre?

I've got a petrol guzzling Mondeo which is 2 litres and I really need to get something that does a lot more than 300 miles for £65.00.
Matched betting proceeds so far: £505.00

Skoda Octavia if looks are not that important , cheap to insure and tax, and good fuel economy, and most importantly cheap to buy, well my 2 cents anyway ;)
Excel Parking, MET Parking, Combined Parking Solutions, VP Parking Solutions, ANPR PC Ltd, & Roxburghe Debt Collectors. What do they all have in common?
They are all or have been suspended from accessing the DVLA database for gross misconduct!
Do you really need to ask what kind of people run parking companies?

Before doing this, have you considered the current premium on diesel car prices and compared that to how much fuel you are likely to save during the time you own the car.

This is particularly important if you mostly do short trips and/or urban driving.

polo bluemotion? Most tiny hatchback diesels with 1500cc or smaller engine.

But they wont be as efficient at motorway speeds and above.

thats about the same MPG as i was getting on my 2L petrol mondeo.
Diesel one only managed 28mpg during the snowy weather.

Been to skegness from the midlands and back approx 400 miles so far and still 1/4 tank left.
    2L diesel 6 speed.

Potential issues with DPF as well. Not as bad as some make out but an added thing to consider and relative to your driving style.

DPF was the point I was working towards, depending on how they replied to the question about their usage.

Why on earth are diesels more to insure? My current Passat TDi is the same price as my old 106 1.4 to insure. Either way only a couple of hundred quid.

You get a better resale too though, so the purchase price is fairly irrelevant as long as you can afford it. Petrols depreciate a LOT quicker.

Almost any medium sized common rail diesel, or similar. Don't believe the hype about expensive service costs, never found it to be true. ;);)

Mine will do those 300 for about £25-30 dependant on driving.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
