Just me and the girlfriend. She filled the boot of a Ford Falcon to the brim but to be fair she'd been travelling for 6 months and we were there for rather longer than your average holiday, so hopefully 2 people for 2.5 weeks can cram it all into the boot of a Mustang?0 -

On the question of how many cars -
It might be worth considering how long you're staying in each city. SF you won't need a car. LA you will.
I went to SF once and put the rental in a long term garage for 3 days (waste of money!!).
Also, Vegas if there fore 3 or 4 days get a car for a couple (to see Hoover dam etc) and then get rid for a couple of days.
When doing this, and using netflights, I always "upgrade" to the cheapest option to include a tank of gas. Filling up will cost up to $50+ (if you have a full size) for the 5 / 10 quid upgrade (used to be 2 quid)0 -

I can't see you having any problems at all. Don't take hard cases though because that will restrict what you can get in the boot. We had two very large soft bags, two hand luggage type bags, a laptop, a rigid coolbox, various camera bags, souvenirs, and other assorted cr^p. It all fitted in the boot somehow.0 -
Thrifty and Dollar let you choose your car from a designated section. As someone pointed out above, you would usually just get a bog standard Mustang if you get one (3.6/4.0 GT or something like that). Hertz do a special Shelby Mustang that was built specifically for them, the Shelby GT-H (for Hertz). More info here;

Certainly something different and would be a blast to drive. It will surely come at a cost though...0 -
i can confirm dollar at lax let you choose from any they have in that catagory0

Hi guys,
thanks for the advice so far. Netflights have come up with a 'Mustang or similar' from Thrifty at LAX. Anyone rented with Thrifty at this location? Do you get to pick the car?0 -

Then, if you're still unhappy you can pay for upgrades0 -

Yes, from what they have available in that class. They just can't guarantee to have a Mustang when you arrive. They are, understandably, covering themselves.
I do understand your plight though. I went through the same thing. I really didn't want one of those motorised bathtubs (I think they are called PT Cruisers). I got offered a choice of Sebring (OAPmobile) or a Mustang though.0 -
Just my tuppence worth - I'd be looking for a Luxury Class car, then at least you've got a excellant chance that you'll be getting at least a decent V6, with a chance that you'll get a V8.
Convertables are ok if you like that sort of thing, but for me, comfort wins out every time.0 -

I'm torn, really. I actually quite like luxury (my own car is a 5 Series) but I often drive a Z4 and simply love having the roof down, it's fantastic fun. And everyone says having a Convertible on Highway 101 is just one of those things you HAVE to do.
A Luxury is about the same price as a Convertible, so it isnt even a cost thing...0
