Mine are on a USB memory stick.

PS. Having said that, USB sticks are not reliable enough for long term storage. I really ought to copy the files onto my PC's hard disc and also burn them onto a CD-R or CD-RW disc.

    Hi Spooky Pooky,

There's an earlier thread that should help so I've added your thread to it to keep all the suggestions together.

  • I agree with Mr Leak - storing them electronically is probably the best and safest way these days. Am in the process of copying my favourites to a file then will copy to disc or some such new-fangled whatsit. (if I ever learn how!!)
I have a card index I made before I left the parental home (HOW long ago:eek: ) - use it for reference now, but writing too teeny to easily follow in the kitchen. I liberated some A4 plastic pockets from work, and bought a Lever Arch file to keep mine in recently cos I tended to keep the whole magazine or had clippings/copies all over the place. This way, you can unclip the original recipe (with any notes) and use it easily/wipe clean in the kitchen.

I pretty much remember my recipes (or make them up:rotfl: ) - but I can appreciate what a blow this was, you poor thing.

If you do still have any originals - maybe you could scan them to your PC file too??

Good luck - and remember the fabulous recipe index on here!!!

To be honest, my recipes are all over the place
    • I cut and paste into a word doc and save in a folder on my machine
    • I also have a whole load of notebooks full of handwritten recipes from when I first started doing OS cooking (I then ran out of notebooks and decided that cheap A4 printing paper was more economical)
    • My best version is a ring binder with dividers for 'bread', 'cheap meals', 'vegetarian' etc. etc Unfortunately this is now packed to bursting and I need to get a couple more ring binders and dividers and reorganise. I now have a pile of recipes on A4 paper which I regularly shuffle through :o
Enjoying an MSE OS life :D
  • I've got an A5 sized hardback lined notebook I have had since I was about 12..... My DD's love it - there is my name, then you see it changed when I was married, then it's changed again since the divorce, lol! Also my handwriting from when I was young(er) fascinates them.

Some of the recipes are things like "Nanny's sponge cake", "Flo's lemon drizzle cake" and so on.... so it is more than just recipes, it's a personal link to some of the family who are no longer with us - like my nan's; but it keeps them real to my DD's (who knew them too). Keeps the memories alive - so they're more than just recipes. Then all the loose bits I've written up/printed out/torn out of mags are in a wooden magazine box next to my other cookbooks. I've got a few of Jamie's & Nigella's domestic goddess - I used to have loads but had a cull!!

  • Thanks this was so helpful. I am now going to start a lever arch file, subdivided and keep the recipes in punch pockets. This will be more flexible than my old approach and less susceptible to free flying cake mix / gravy which adorned the more popular recipes in my old bible!

I am still gutted though - I don't know how I managed to lose it. When I moved I didn't pack it until the last moment as it is so important but somehow it is gone :( But onwards and upwards, i will start again, in a better way AND I WILL BACK IT ALL UP!!

Thanks for all your help and suggestions - and please can someone point me in the direction of the MSE recipe index mentioned here earlier as i've not come across that yet, but assume it would prove invaluable.

Have a lovely Sunday. i'm off to plan two weeks of menus xxx
  • Hi Spooky - just go to the top of this page where it says 'Start here'. Click on 'Indexed Collections' just underneath and you'll opening Pandora's Box!:j

Set aside quite a while......it's a brilliant collection of recipes, tips, ideas and so much more - and dangerously addictive!!

I keep all my recipes in a rather dog eared leather bound book that I found amongst my sisters belongings when we were clearing her house out after her death. My sister was a wonderful cook and would have appreciated the fact I still use her recipes and have added to her collection with recipes of my own.Its getting a little full now but before she died my sister had had another recipe book specially made with her name engraved on it so when this one is full I'll move onto that one.I'd never part with either of them and will pass them onto my girls when I get older so that the recipes can continue to be made and loved as much as we have loved them

I have one of those plastic presentation folder things with plastic wallet-type pages. I had an enthusiastic phase of filling it with things torn out of magazines and scribbled on the back of envelopes, but haven't had it out in a while, I admit...:o
