Dell con-artists

Hi, :D

A friend of mine has got a Dimemsion 3100 with Pentium 4 (2.8Ghz) 512MB RAM, but a piddly 15" TFT, no DVD Rewriter, no optical mouse.

Considering they paid £540 for it, shouldn't they have had a better system?? I got my Inspiron 6000 for cheaper than this desktop.

It was delivered around 26th July I think, so do you think it's worth phoning Dell and complaining?? I want to because it isn't value for money that they have been given here.

Thanks :D

I don't know what he can complain about.

    Dear Dell

I recently bought a system off you, your current offers make it look like I paid a lot more than I needed to when I bought the machine. Could I please return the computer so I can get a better offer.........

This would give the dell staff a good laugh in the office.

  • Was the PC your friend received the same spec as they ordered? If so, I can't see that you can call Dell 'con-artists'. There is no duty for retailers to provide good value for money. It is up to the consumer to shop around and decide on the best deal for them.

Regarding the comparison with your Inspiron, what is the difference in spec between the two, what software came with each and what warranty? If you can provide this information we can probably work out why theirs was more expensive than yours.

He/she can probably return it under the Distance Selling Regulations though he/she will probably have to pay the delivery and return costs. Get your friend to look at the Dell Terms and Conditions he should have been sent.

No, they prey on vulnerable customers. I know a lot about computers and hardware, but this individual knows nothing and they used this to get a huge profit. :ad:

Could you please help and spare the useless comments?? ;)

I doubt it, they've had it since 26th July

    Dimension 3100:

    Pentium 4 HT 2.8Ghz
    512MB RAM
    120GB HDD
    CD-RW
    Rollerball Mouse
    15" screen
    Scanner at extra cost
    Printer at extra cost
    Paid extra for delivery

Compare with my 18 month old Inspiron 6000 which was top of the range when I got it  :

    Pentium M 1.6Ghz (Centrino Chipset)
    Build in Wireless
    15.4" screen
    Optical USB Mouse
    DVD+/-RW (8x)
    Free carry case
    Free printer
    Free delivery
Extra £25 off for threatening to cancel when it was delayed a week

The stuff in bold is what is better about each machine. I think you'll agree I got a much better deal back last year ;)

I've tried looking for Dell deals on the grabbit board but not much luck :( any good ones we could use as leverage when phoning?

The DSR are no good in this case. They only offer a 7 day grace period starting the day after you place the order online.

The Sale of Goods Act is also no good in this case. This only protects you if there is a fault with the product. It gives no protection on price.

Dell offered X computer at X price. Your friend saw the offer, and agreed to the specs and price thereby completing the contract on the terms stated by Dell in the first place. Just because he now feels he has paid too much is not Dells fault. It is his fault for not shopping around. I can't see that he has ANY recourse back to Dell because of this.

Sorry but I feel I should explain the situation to you because you sound like some hardened businessman ;)

This is a she, not a he. Her husband recently died in a tragic accident. She has two young children and has to juggle a job as a nurse. She has too much to deal with in her life.

So please, just help me get her what she deserves

    Sorry, I misread the date!

I agree with Rex_Mundi. Dell fulfilled their part of the contract so there is no comeback.

I'm not trying to be hard on you or your friend here. I am trying to explain that there is nothing you can do in this situation. What are you expecting? Phone Dell, and they will take sympathy on your friend and refund part of the money? This will never happen. They are a business out to make money. Your friend completed a contract with them under terms that they clearly stated (specs/price etc). Dell have done nothing wrong.

My only advice here would be to take this as a lesson, and next time she buys a computer (or any high price item she doesn't understand too much about), get advice before she buys the product.
