Are you paying 2 standing charges ?

You should only be paying one

Paying two, they claim this is right. Also, I did ask would I be eligible for a retrospective reimbursement seeing as I've been here six months and never used that supply, unfortunately no - they will only stop the charge once the cap is done and they've sent someone to double check it.

Maybe its different in your area then, i know here its only one standing charge except business premises.

I presume your neighbours also have 2 meters maybe have a word with them to see if they are paying 2 standing charges.

If it is there policy it will pay to get it capped, shouldn't cost much as its pretty easy to do

in the area i work we fit up to two meters to properties if there are two feeds coming into a property and we cannot fit one external. This is not abnormal, the water act says, apparently, that everybody has the right to be charged through a meter so if this property has two feeds, one in the front and one the back, then the solution is two meters.

as for the disconnection, all disconnections are charged for. why would the water company do it for free?

The water act does indeed say everyone has the right to be charged through a meter however sometimes that is no possible so assessed would come into play..But that is not the issue here, just thought I would add a bit to the above.
If there are 2 points of supply to a property you will get 2 meters, some commercial units have 3 plus meters.

Only one meter should ever be charged for standing charges and that is standard across the water companies so the first thing to do it make sure the account is set up correctly as a domestic household account with 2 meters. How many surface water charges are you getting ?

As for the second part of the above post, it is not correct. Not all companies charge for permanent disconnections and most temporary disconnections are free as well, it is the reconnection that will cost.

Most of the water companies I have dealt with will disconnect for free as the meter and main supply is their property and they do not want someone messing around with it, also as it would mean they would stop the charges they want to make sure it is actually done rather then someone saying they had it dealt with.

You need to apply for a disconnection and also WRITE a letter asking for the 2 sets of charges to be explained. Make sure you use words like "unhappy" " complaint" etc as that will make sure it is logged onto the system as a "cross complaint" and that HAS to be responded to with 10 working days (DG7)

sounds like it is registered as a seperate address to me.... like for instance a a cattle trough might be miles away from the dwelling so would be a seperate address ... explain that this is part of the property - ie outside loo - & if needed insist that they visit to check .... one 'property' = one set of standing charges!
I THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I Know
