How are desires updated?

  • Many thanks for that.

Mine is on Orange and unlocked and has nothing on there to do with Orange so no Orange Logo,s or anything pre installed from Orange.

It sounds like you have an unbranded phone possibly in that case - which is what you want really.

I actually am wondering whether the networks are getting to the stage where they are supplying these types of phones unbranded because it's far far easier for them to support it - plus they don't have to update their stuff that they put on top.

Let's face it unless it's network specific feature that can't be provided any other way then there's not a lot of reason for the networks to gunk up folks phones with crap. They'd be better writing apps and putting them on the Android Market.

That is interesting if they have withdrawn the update. I wonder why. As you say though you can get it directly from HTC support.
my guess is that it is definitely withdrawn. i had forgotten to update one of my desire phones (both unlocked and unbranded from three), so now one is on the 1.21.405.2 CL174215 software update and the other on the 1.15.405.4 CL155070 version and when i try manual or auto updates both are now shown as the most recent version available on each phone respectively.

quite a few are querying this on three blog as well.

as to what the update changes are about, see this blog post http://desirefanatics.wordpress.com/2010/06/09/changes-in-the-htc-desire-firmware-v-1-21-110-4/

there is a correction from me. the update has NOT been withdrawn, it is just being done in a phased manner. so different phones may get the update at different times over the air. i have just got off the phone with HTC customer support http://www.htc.com/www/CA_Hotline.aspx and they told me the update becomes available over the air at different times for different handsets. presently the update isnt available on the htc website yet for updating manually!!!!!

so one cant get around this problem because htc havent got their act together yet and made the download available yet on their website for manual downloads.
