Meat in an unexpected place

  • That's the problem - it varies everywhere. Nothing in this takeaway was labelled "V"... in fact I only generally see that at hippy-type places.

It's an equal frustration at Supermarkets. Pick up a jar of brand name sauce... it doesn't have a "V" on it, but there's nothing obvious in the ingredients either. So is it vegetarian on a brand that doesn't bother labelling, or is there some secret animal ingredient (like cheese made with animal rennet)?

EDIT TO ADD: Oo, and I wasn't unsure! I was very sure!

With supermarket products, if it doesn't have a V, it probably isn't veggie! There are lots of ingredients that aren't suitable for vegetarians, that aren't instantly recognisable as animal-based. There is a good list here - http://www.vegsoc.org/info/stumbling.html

Things such as pepsin, whey (possibly, some whey can be vegetarian).

I just err on the side of caution, and always check if there is no v symbol in a restaurant.

I don't eat meat so I didn't know stuffed peppers normally come with meat, so I would have assumed the same as the OP. When you're used to not eating meat you don't always have the same "obvious" knowledge as a meat-eater.

As you got the meal in India , it would be more likely to be vegetarian. But still, it seemed to be your assumption rather than their advertising that was in error :(

What I never understand is that when a vegetarian comes to me for dinner I make sure they have a veggie meal which is prepared using utensils etc that are not used for meat i.e. I am making an effort to accomodate thier choice.
So why when I go to a vegitarians for a meal can they not cook me a nice steak to accomodate my choice?
Approach her; adore her. Behold her; worship her. Caress her; indulge her. Kiss her; pleasure her. Kneel to her; lavish her. Assert to her; let her guide you. Obey her as you know how; Surrender is so wonderful! For Caroline my Goddess.

From my experience (as sopmeone whos been Veggie from a young age) really, really bad stomach cramps for 2-5 days. May well be different for people who grew up eating meat.

Well its you thats making the decision and effort to accommodate their choice, and props to you for it - most veggies are well accustomed to taking a veggie alternative to a BBQ or even meal at someones house.

And I have made the effort to cook meat containing dishes in the past for guests. Unfortunately, it appears that, other than a simple ham sandwich or the like, its not usually appreciated - not only do I not really know how to cook meat (especially something as complicated as steak) but I am obviously unwilling to 'tast test' dishes to see if they are cooked properly. Not only that, if meat eaters come over for dinner, its usually 'expected' of veggie hosts to cook up some crazy veggie feast as proof we don't all live on linda mcartney ready meals and nut loaf.

I never understand when people like you say this either *confused shrug*

Isn't it more about when a friend comes for dinner you try and make them something they like which is within your range of acceptable dishes. so if you had a meat liking but fussy friend who liked only chicken or dog, you'd probably make them chicken.

Likewise if you visited them you would expect them to make things that they like and are familiar with but to take into account your tastes ie you wouldn't really expect them to serve you dog.

This gracelessness that some people show towards vegetarians really puzzles me.

My now husband used to talk about a really funny skit he did with a friend making fun of the fact that some veggies don't like the same utensils used on their meals and on the meaty meals (I don't mind myself :p) but what's funny about the skit is that my husband is the same about onions, he goes crazy about a wooden spoon used to stir oniony pasta sauce and then his own - he can taste it you see *rolleyes*. No irony there then ;)
