(I do have the option to return the laptop to factory settings and start again - it is a fairly new laptop with not a lot on it, so that is a possibility)

If your happy to do so, then thats definitely the way to go

OP, bear in mind that if you do a Factory Restore you will lose all your data and settings, and all your aftermarket software. If you follow RIK's instructions to clean your system it wil be fine, he has helped me out many times.

Okay, I'm happy to keep going with this for the moment, hopefully a restore won't be necessary, but I have backed up my documents just in case (fortunately all my photos are on my other laptop, which makes life easier)

When you encounter these problems always do the same as you do with hijack this
whilst pressing the SHIFT key, right click the mouse and select RUN AS

Okay, LSPFIX is downloaded and saved, but I can't find it in the start menu so I can't do the shift/right click to run as administrator (when I do a search for it, I can find it, but then the shift/right click doesn't work).

    Any ideas?

It won't appear in the Start menu because you haven't yet installed it. Where did you save it to? Try either your desktop or your downloads folder, or do a search for the file name.

Downloads should be in the DOWNLOADS folder
Goto the start menu (Bottom left), select your username then select the downloads folder

    Hi

Thank you all so much for helping me with this, but I have decided to restore the laptop to its factory settings. I do really appreciate your help and I am really sorry to have taken up so much of your time.

I'm now in the process of reloading the programmes that I use regularly.

At least it will have the advantage of removing all the unwanted stuff for me (although it is a bit of a drastic way to go about it).

Once again, many thanks, I really do appreciate everything you've tried to do for me, and apologies for being such a numpty when trying to carry out your instructions.

A painful learning experience for you, the best way to stop a problem is don't get it in the first place.

    - Win7
    - get all the crraapp off especially all the pretend free stuff MacAfee etc
    - put on Microsoft Security Essentials
    - all Microsoft updates
    - as many of the free Windows Live progs from Microsoft, they are good at what they do - and free !

You should do these protective things before you get to '' in the process of reloading the programmes that I use regularly ''

You should then use a benign product like ccleaner to tidy up the rubbish left in the registry from uninstalls etc

And that is the best bit of advice I've had all day :o

Thanks again to everyone, I am now up and running again.

In fact, the re-install was so painless that I am tempted to do the same with my netbook, which has a lot of programmes and downloads that I no longer use. It almost seems easier to back up the stuff I want and then just take it back to factory settings.

Is there any reason why I shouldn't do this?

    Thanks

    Daisy
