MOT re-test

Hello, sorry for starting a new thread as I'm sure there must be an answer to my question somewhere but am getting somewhat confused with information and worried that it may be out of date!

Have taken my car to Nationwide Autocentre for a full service and MOT today (I know, but thought it was a good use of Tesco clubcard vouchers!). My car failed it's MOT on headlight alignment, which they have said will cost £13 to fix. Have agreed over the phone for them to do this and have not taken the car away. However, when I asked they have said that I will need to pay an MOT retest fee of £27. Is it no longer the case that you should be given a free retest if the car is not taken away or are they trying to con me?

Thanks,
Ali

Not necessarily. A MOT is only guaranteed to be free on a certain number of things but most garages won't charge on the chargeable things if you get them to do the work. However I'd expect them to retest a headlight alignment for free because after all, they're using the same machine they use to align it to do the test.

All in all, not a good customer retention programme.

    Rubbish.

If Your Vehicle Fails Due to Other Items

If the vehicle is left at the MOT testing station for repair and is retested before the end of 10 working days following the day of failure, then only a partial retest is needed for which no fee is charged.

The site linked to changes the wording of the official MOT leaflet slightly in the favour of the testing stations with reference to retest charges (although it agrees that in this instance no fee is chargeable). The main gripe I have is that it states if a vehicle is taken away from the station (for other items) then a retest fee is charged whereas the official leaflet states that a retest fee may be charged giving the impression that the testing station must charge whereas they actually have the option to charge or not.

Headlight Alignment? Unless they are fixing something and not just adjusting them then yes it's a con.

My tester gets his screwdriver and adjusts them until they pass. !!!!!! why do people keep going back to these cowboys?

How does that make what I said wrong? Not everything included in the MOT is listed on that page. You'll notice such things as brakes not on that list....

If your vehicle fails for other items not on the list, brakes etc, anything it fails on, if it's left at the garage and they fix it, no fee is charged.
Lights are on the list anyway, so even if you take it and fix it there should be no fee.

Is wrong. A retest fee does apply, even if the garage did the work, but it is at the discretion of the garage whether they apply it or not.

Well, I've quoted a source that says you're wrong, so I'll wait for your proof you're right.
