Decking - I did it myself!

A good effort. Nice to see someone who gets stuck in, instead of all the "I can't do DIY" wimps we seem to get on here.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Very well done. It looks great. I would imagine that you saved yourself in the region of £800 by doing it yourself.

Well done! Looks good and a big improvement on what was there! Gives me some ideas too. I like that you haven't just gone for a standard square and been a bit more ambitious with the diagonal corner. Did you just use a handsaw or electric mitre saw or something else out of interest. Like how you built around the tree!
Was the decking from timber merchants and was it a particular brand? I'd be interested to know what you paid per metre or board on the deck boards. Reason i ask is i'm planning a deck myself (bit smaller at 2.4mx3m and without the balustrading - though i might reconsider that bit now i've seen your deck!) I see there's a deal on at Wickes at the moment that ends on wednesday though their decking seems to get mixed reviews on their website plus i'm not really ready to start on the project yet. Don't want to just buy the wickes stuff based on price though. From the pictures your deck boards look decent quality..not many knots and can't see any split/warps. Assume the timber bearers you used for the base are pressure treated (can see you've treated the cuts).
Anyway good luck on your next project!
Thanks for that Andrew... Yes, the deck boards were from the local timber merchants. Not only were they cheaper than B&Q and Wickes, they seemed better quality and they delivered for free! But I don't remember how much per metre. I wish I knew what I did with the receipts!
The first deck I built at our old house was 4m wide and 2.4m from the house. It was just the deck but I did have 45 degree angles on the 2 corners closest to the garden. So having already done that one gave me the confidence to build this one.
I've got a Mitre Circular Saw, a power 'precision' saw and a JML 'Exakt Saw'. I must say, when I got to the stage of putting all the deck bearers down and then just 'placed' the deck boards down, I said to my husband...
"It looks boring... I think it needs some sort of a fence - can we afford to add that on to the price?" Well, all I can say is that I'm pleased we added that bit onto a credit card because it makes all the difference!
Yes, it's all pressure treated timber and I treated all ends that I cut myself.
Yes, the tree!! A cordyline that I really like, so much I made the deck around it. But, what I did do wad to build the deck so that if it ever died or I ever wanted to take it out, it would only need 3 boards to 'fill in' the gap.DEBT FREE BY 60Starting Debt 21st August 2019 = £11,024

Great job! I have emailed your pics to my other half as he keeps saying he wants to re-do ours
Well Lynn, all I'll say is if he won't do it I'll come and do it BUT...
I work at my own pace - usually work for 20 minutes and then stop for 20 minutes with a glass of Ribena & lemonade. Took me about 4 weeks!!
But seriously, I'm still amazed I've done it and had I known how to put photos on here last year I would have done a day-by-day diary.DEBT FREE BY 60Starting Debt 21st August 2019 = £11,024

Good on you, eh!

Thanks Mr. Canuck, nice to see you again! I'll be starting to make the foundations for my barn over the next few weekends but then we'll have to see how our finances are to get the timber. We went to visit my sister in California at Easter (and got stranded for a week!) so money is a bit tight!DEBT FREE BY 60Starting Debt 21st August 2019 = £11,024

Thanks..i think i'll have to shop around the timber merchants once i've got my shed painted and installed. Gives me a couple of weeks to think about it and plan properly rather than rushing to order from wickes and throw away the saving on delivery costs! Another excuse for some new power tools to be let loose with! Hopefully the decking project won't take 2 years to become reality like the shed!0

Well I think our shed/barn might be 2 years in the planning & making! I bought the book at Easter 2009 and I'll be doing the foundations over the next few weeks (if my ovarian cyst & sciatica holds off!) then it'll be down to when we can afford the timber! We might end up with a chipboard shell covered in a tarpaulin sheet for a year!
Good luck with it!DEBT FREE BY 60Starting Debt 21st August 2019 = £11,024
