Decking - I did it myself!

Please forgive me but I want to show off my decking that I built during the last summer holidays. Just a bit of background info...

I'm a 45 years old woman that always gets bored during the 6 weeks holiday from my job in a school. I did build a deck at my old house about 5 years ago but I used Wickes 'slot together' deck bearers.

Now I know how to upload photos onto here I can show [STRIKE]off[/STRIKE] you all!

In this last photo it wasn't finished, I hadn't got round to putting the fence along the left side but it's there now! The only bits I asked my husband's help was when I screwed the panels to the posts to create the fence/rail.

Close... A baby barn actually! And if that works out.... A summer house!

My husband is Canadian and last time we went to Canada I bought a 'Barns & Sheds' book from Home Depot and took photos of various baby barns. I'll find them and add them here.

Gosh, that's hard to answer cos I didn't keep the receipts from the timber merchants. I know the panels with the metalwork were reduced to £120 for the 5, because they were discontinued.

At a guess I spent about £400 on the timber, deck boards and handrail & spindles. The posts I bought from B&Q when they had 15% off. I would say roughly £600 altogether. The size of it is an 'L' shape 5m x 6m at the longest and 3m x 2m at the shortest.

Here's my next project although I won't be using shingles and it certainly be that colour. I noticed when I was in B&Q yesterday that you can now order baby barns from there. I'd rather make my own though!

Well done! Looks good and a big improvement on what was there! Gives me some ideas too. I like that you haven't just gone for a standard square and been a bit more ambitious with the diagonal corner. Did you just use a handsaw or electric mitre saw or something else out of interest. Like how you built around the tree!

Was the decking from timber merchants and was it a particular brand? I'd be interested to know what you paid per metre or board on the deck boards. Reason i ask is i'm planning a deck myself (bit smaller at 2.4mx3m and without the balustrading - though i might reconsider that bit now i've seen your deck!) I see there's a deal on at Wickes at the moment that ends on wednesday though their decking seems to get mixed reviews on their website plus i'm not really ready to start on the project yet. Don't want to just buy the wickes stuff based on price though. From the pictures your deck boards look decent quality..not many knots and can't see any split/warps. Assume the timber bearers you used for the base are pressure treated (can see you've treated the cuts).

Anyway good luck on your next project!

Good afternoon: love the baby barn...brings back memories. We went home over Easter..spent more than a few hours browsing and chatting with staff in Home Depot and Lowes..seventh heaven.;)

    Good on you, eh!

Incidentally there's a thread on here i started for building your own shed..when i was looking i vaguely recall coming across some plans for the mini-barn style of shed. Can't seem to find it now the plans now but i daresay google will come up trumps. Will have a look for you (rain stop play at moment) and will post them on that thread if i find. Over 2 years later (yeah yeah i'm slow lol) and i'm finally getting a new ready made shed from florada delivered tomorrow (euro plus range) - decided building own was too much hassle and worked out more expensive! CH, probably going to try Burbidges for decking though!

Edit: I found this:http://www.extremehowto.com/xh/article.asp?article_id=60282 ..hope it helps... it was actually in the list of links from post #15 in that other thread.
