Someone just crashed into the back of me

Its not your fault at all, something went into the back of you. The car hit you. Its probably the most clear cut you can get. It will be a lot of hassle and I hope you don't get any whip lash but don't worry about any blame.
I do feel for you as it must be so stressful.0 -
As others have said, not your fault.
My advice, as someone who has been rear ended, don't contact your insurance other than to notify them of the accident as required in your policy, have a third party company arrange the repairs. Some here will probably lay into me for this as it can push up the overall cost to the guy who hit you, but.
1) You pay no excess, so need to try and claim it back
2) If you go through your own insurance, your NCB goes away until the 3rd party insurance pay up
3) If you manage to get through an entire policy year without the 3rd party paying up you will never get that NCB back (trust me I have first hand experience in this one. Ended up paying for the repairs myself just to get my NCB back, and didn't see the money back for 2 years with no interest)
HelpHire are the standard company people use for this sort of thing. I'll warn you that these days they're no more helpful than the muppets at your insurance company as they seem to have become a victim of their own success, but they're no less helpful than the muppets at your insurance company either. Also for £10 you can get an insurance policy whereby they cover all the costs (and therefore you do not lose your NCB) if the guy who hit you later turns out to be uninsured.0
