i DO want to work, i dont refuse.

You do refuse. You keep saying 'suitable'. And if you can get to college then you can get to work.

Unfortunately it is you that doesn't understand.

There are plenty of jobs that are suited to you, you just refuse to believe it. You just want the 'perfect' job.

A job is a job tbh. You should apply for supermarkets, franchises, anywhere other students apply for.

I have found a lot of people complaining about lack of jobs, and tbh most of it is a lie for the student area. A lot of companies are looking for cheap labour, and students are one the best for that.

Look in the right place, and you will find one :)

You want a car, you will not find a loan, you will need to get any job and save. Think about it, just get a crappy job in a supermarket for 6 months working at weekends and some evenings. In 6 months time you can have enough for a car and insurance, and then you can get this suitable job.

I think it depends where you are. I recruit staff and normally struggle to get enough students for the summer. This summer I am having to turn people away. I am taking the best and sharing the work out, none of them will get fulltime hours this year. My daughter is a student and lots of her friends are struggling. She will be working for me again this year but like the others she won't be working fulltime.

It is really tough in some places and the south west isn't doing great. We normally compete with hotels and various places that cater for the visitors (restaurants, holiday parks etc) but this year they aren't recruiting so much, maybe some are hanging on and will take people on next month but just now alot of people are worried.

  • Hmmm. Are there any Head Chefs on here that would even consider employing this one on the basis of how he speaks to people trying to explain things to him?

Nah. Didn't think so. They'd expect him to decide 'Chef doesn't know jack, so I'm going to season it just how I like', ruin expensive ingredients and lose customers.

OP, if you try taking that attitude in front of any chef, even if it is directed at a 'mere' waitress or customer, you are likely to

    a) get things thrown at you - including your P45 and
    b) spend the rest of your super special catering career on potwash.

I suggest getting off the high horse and taking any job available, including unpaid for experience, just so it makes it more likely that you become employable at some time in the future as you mature. I suggest the local pub collecting glasses, potwash, volunteering with meals on wheels or a church group lunch club.

Eventually you might get yourself in a position where you can actually become employable and can then get yourself knives.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

ASA - Firstly - good on you for going to college and for wanting to get a job.

But I would say that people are responding to you in the manner you describe, because you are A) repeating yourself and B) not very clear. The majority of people on this forum ARE extremely helpful when they can be.

Firstly, the only loan that I know of, that it sounds like you are referring to, is a student loan. And no, you can't get it unless you are going for a degree. End of. Sorry, it doesn't matter how much you want it, you're not going to get it. The only other thing that I can think of is a career development loan, but I am not sure where you for these, or what the eligibility criteria are. Have you asked at the college if they know of anything that can help you? There should be a student services rep - they're usually very knowledgeable.

Have you tried the Access to Learning Fund? You might be eligible for something from there (it might help pay for your whites).

The other thing I would say, and the reason people are getting frustrated with you - why are there no jobs that are *suitable* for you? What makes them unsuitable?

Do you mean that they aren't in catering? Do you mean they're gender specific? Do you mean you don't have the right qualifications/experience? What makes them unsuitable?

I appreciate that it can be difficult to get a job, specially one that fits around college, and if you ARE reliant on public transport, that are damn near impossible to get to especially if they are odd hours.

But if your expectations and "requirements" are the get a job in the relevant field, then you have to lower them. For now. Many people on here, including myself, have done all sorts and everything to earn extra money - when I was struggling with debt, as well as working my full time day job, I used to go and input dockets for a couriers, for six hours a night several times a week. This was well "beneath" my experience, abilities and then, current position, but I did it because I needed the money. I've sold prawns in pubs. I've just finished a degree and shall probably go back to despatching taxis, at least for the time being. Is this job "suitable"? Well, it pays money, so yes.

So, if you want people to accept and understand why these jobs are unsuitable, then you need to tell us why. And you need to accept the fact that you cannot get a student loan.

I am training to be a Primary School Teacher.

A suitable job for me would to be to work in a school as a teaching assistant. However, this is not practical with my uni work so instead I work in a shop at the weekends and work for a supply agency during my extra long uni holidays and days off, where schools potentially need supply.

What people on here are saying is - can you not get a job in a different sector to try and raise a bit of money? I have worked in my part time retail job for five years, and whilst I hate it even more now than when I started, it is a guaranteed 12 hours a week so a guaranteed amount of money coming in. I can then use this money to pay for my car (and all the expense which comes with it) to be able to travel to different schools as and when needed (and get to uni and get to placement schools for teaching practice).

This is the right time to be looking for a summer job - students going home for the summer from uni. If you can get a job and work over the summer, whether it be in a supermarket, shop, a cafe, as a waiter, an office junior or something relevant to your course you could start earning the money which you could then use however you wished. The part time job does not have to be related to your course. Anything to get a bit of money.

It is admirable that you want to better yourself, but you are going to have to accept that no such loan is available to you and if you want to do it then you have to get up, go out and find it. No-one will come knocking on your door saying "We need a chef at the pub across the road."

    Good luck.

Asa you need to start being more realistic.
No-one is going to give a loan to someone with no income and no means of paying it back
As for the car how would you plan on paying the insurance, the tax, MOT, breakdown cover (you're gonna need it on an older car) never mind the petrol money

As for the job situation you need to stop limiting your search to catering jobs.
You should be applying for everything and anything in your area

Have you rung around local pubs that serve food, just to see if they need a pot washer?
You never know it might be a foot in the door to a chef job when you've finished college!
Others to think about are waitering and maybe even silver service at catering events?

Anything that brings in the money

Unfortunately you will not get a preferential loan like a student loan end of story so you need to think about other ways of raising the cash.

If you want to earn some money, get a bucket of water, some window cleaning solution and knock people doors offering to clean their windows. A friend of mine did exactly this and is now making a killing.

Also give us your post code and I'm we can all make some suggestions were to enquire for work in your area.

Also a scooter is also cheaper to run and buy than a car.
