If you ask at the job centre there is a scheme to help young people who need transport to get a job. It is for a motorbike or scooter I think, I don't think you have to pay anything, they lend you the bike. I don't know alot about it but a young employee of mine got one. You probably have to be signing on to get it but you might be able to sign on for the summer if you are ending one course and waiting to start another, sorry I dont know about that for sure, but it is worth asking. Good luck, I know it is hard if you live out in the sticks and stuck for transport.

These schemes are regional rather than national and are, where they exist, are to help the long term unemployed.

On the other hand, trying to pick a secondhand bike cheaply or from Freecycle (!) would be a good idea.

I don't know how big the regions are but the OP sounds like he is in the South West and so am I. The teenager who got the bike was fresh out of the box (sorry school) longest he had qualified as unemployed was a few months so I dont think he would qualify as long term unemployed so the scheme might help. Anyway fingers crossed as this sounds like the sort of young person who could benefit.

There aren't any. Why does your job have to be catering? Why can't you work in a Supermarket? Or a shop?

Sounds like you are asking if anyone knows of any PARENTS on offer anywhere.

Why do you expect someone to throw buckets of cash your way when you have absolutly NO mechanism to repay anything???

I think you need to open your eyes to the way the World works.

You could get a job, any job, you seem to think you are above anything other than cheffing. This is the big wide World you are in now, grow a pair and go out and work for your living instead of whining about not getting your life on a plate (!!)

You of all people should know there is no such thing as a free lunch!!

Nobody has missed the point; there are no loans that are like Student Loans that will enable you to buy a car or do anything else!

If you are near enough to a town that has a college then there will be catering outlets there as well as shops etc and you have to accept that working at something whilst saving money is going to be the only way that you're going to get your own car.

Edit: And, by the way, when you are 18 with few qualifications and no job, "a few thousand" is not a small loan.

    No such exists!

Any loans you go for will be 10%+ interest and repayments would start immediately, even if you are unemployed.

    You will unlikely get anything.

A crappy old car will cost around £200. Years tax = £120 (or you can go 6 months!). Insurance will be around £1500-£2000.

You do not need a car to get anywhere. Although it is very useful, but very expensive.

A bike for cycling to get into town. Or there's always the bus. If you are going into catering, maybe work at your local Domino's or something. Although not ideal its in the evenings and weekends, to fit around college.

In a few years you might get a better deal. e.g. I am now 21 and have been offered a 0% credit card with a £1100 limit! Pretty awesome. However, I imagine I have quite a good credit rating.

Why can't you work in a shop or supermarket? Why do you expect someone to give you several thousand pounds when you refuse to work, have no income and therefore no prospects of paying it back?
