When you talk about Unix, can you clarify what you mean because unless you're able to be more specific, you're not making much sense.I didn't say it was immune to viruses I said it was less prone.
Virus infections are only a small part of what makes up overall computer security. All machines can be comprimised no matter what operating system they are using, which is why skilled system administrators are always in demand especially those who are multi-platform skilled (and that's more than beign able to say they can use Ubuntu..)What causes Windows to be more prone is that the operating system can act like the user so viruses can run automatically that is why you now get prompted over and over as to whether to run anything new or downloaded.
The problem as Hammyman mentioned is the unique way that users of Windows think it's perfectly acceptable to use an account with full administrative privileges on a day-to-day basis with little regard for the consequences of doing so which is why Microsoft introduced a raft of changes in Vista to curtail this behaviour, although some still decide to go against all of this and disable them all.UNIX on the other hand doesn't do that, the user has control.
The user has 'control' on Windows, whether or not they are in control is a different matter. Also UNIX has evolved.
See my first point.I hope you're not suggesting that Windows is a superior OS.
I don't think you're putting forward a balanced argument. What you're doing is drawing a direct comparison with the the problems a home user could suffer against that an advanced set up you're highly unlikely to see anywhere but a well managed corporate network. Comparing a desktop O/S to something like BSD (for arguments sake I'm assuming that's what you meant when you constantly referenced Unix) is pointless because they exist to serve entirely different purposes.
There is no one 'superior' operating system (well, Amiga Workbench but that's another story..). Neither system can do everything equally to the same level as every other, therefore you pick one based on your individual needs and wants.0 -
The only reason Mac's are 'less prone' to viruses/malware/trojans/etc is because there are less macs historically. Therefore it makes sense to target the biggest market, hence there are less chances of infection for a Mac.
Once Apple's market significantly improves (which it has), you'll find a lot more problems will occur. And most of them will be down to the user not taking adequate precautions, much like they are with PC's.
Ignorance is bliss.0 -
No Redman30, you're wrong. Certainly in the Windows XP era, Mac OSX (with UNIX foundations) is fundamentally more secure, harder to compromise. The fact that it has 11% marketshare helps make it less likely to be targeted.0

I know two peeps who both bought 14" ibooks.
I know they bought them for fashion, style, looks and bought into this thing of Macs being "easier to use".
Fast forward 3 years or so..one of them has packed up and the other is a regular source of frustration to the user. The broken one has been replaced with a windows netbook.
Whilst here i have my Tosh Sat A210-12U lappy bought 3 years back for £480 still working perfectly and doing all it needs to do.
Perfectly put sir and the reality s they just aren'tHate and I do mean Hate my apple Mac Computer - wish I'd never bought the thing

Please stop using the word "of" when you actually mean "have" - it's damned annoying :mad:0
