Considering around 90%+ of computers are not Macs, I'm not surprised on this general Techie forum.

Maybe if you actually visit a Mac dedicated forum? Simples...;)

  • Even if you had exactly the same hardware there is another thing that sets them apart, then OS which Microsoft is always trying to copy but does not succeed, why because it doesn't use UNIX. This is the reason it is less prone to viruses and more stable. Microsoft uses a technology that needs replacing Windows 7 is still old underneath.

Also when a new OS comes out on Windows you need to upgrade, if at all possible, it is more expensive software and prone to problems. Upgrading OS on a Mac is easy and inexpensive. Sure people can have problems with Macs too but far less so.

I work in IT support, as my users get Macs for home use, of which most of them do, I don't get them bring in the computers with problems.

As far as having a challenge is concerned, I'm for it We'll devise some challenges from productivity, to speed, video and photo editing, backing up and some maintenance tasks. I'll even get it videoed and I'll put it online to settle this once and for all. Including buying a good quality, not and Acer or poor quality brand but a good one, and seeing if spec for spec it really is cheaper.

  • Hey Millionaire,

Thanks for reminding me about that forum, I've seen it before. However, at at a quick glance I don't see virus problems and the frustrating problems faced by Windows users.

As for cracked lids etc etc, I think you'll find in most cases that is human error. For other faults a visit to an Apple store and they'll fix it, if a known fault for free, unlike the problem HP had with their graphics cards.

    Very simples...

Video and photo editing the Mac would win (assuming it's a reasonable spec to begin with), I don't deny that, but for the rest of the stuff you mention there would be no noticeable difference between them and the price difference doesn't justify it when the vast majority of people only want them for the bog standard bit-of-web-browsing and emails. You know it's true as well...
  • I was hoping someone would say that, thank you Snooze, I do.

So before we all start laying into each other and jumping in with the hammering of the Mac, perhaps we should find out if OH is interested in doing any of that stuff. Also good for sound editing.

But I would have to say an old machine of any kind would be struggling to add the latest plug ins or watch video on the Internet.

So before you all start getting into a rage, as some of you did consider what people want to use for today. My dad is 73 a Mac was perfect for him, he has grandchildren and wanted to video them and edit it. I didn't even show him how. He is not around the corner either to help him.

But I would like to add net books are rubbish please don't recommend these.

For surfing the net, a little word processing and email, look no further than an iPad. That should you guys going;-)

So you have changed your tune from Mac's not suffering from that many problems to they'll fix em if it's a known fault. Many other PC vendors would do the same.

The 'user error' excuse that you have used can be applied to Windows users as well, and many of the questions on here, especially regarding viruses and what not. I haven't had a virus on my PC since the 90's.

I personally own a Macbook and also have had iMac's and I have had both hardware and Software issues on par with the 'frustrating' windows problems.
  • Hi Millionaire,

Not changing my tune at all. Every machine has it faults some more than others.

Human error applies to PCs too. I was pointing out that most of the queries were not the same. The biggest problem for most users is viruses and if you are careful on a windows machine you too will be fine, but most people aren't. Thankfully Macs are less prone.

One thing you must admit is that without Apple chomping at Microsoft's heels would MS have bothered to improve the systems they have.

I had a known fault, a slight marking on the case, it was 3.5 years old, a technician spotted and said hey we'll fix that for nothing, 39 minutes later done.

Well I think you've had bad luck. Except for that mark on the case of the MacBook, I have an iMac bought in 2000 and it is still running faultlessly, an iMac that is two years old and a Macbook pro, no problems whatsoever. No rose coloured glasses just my experience. There are three MacBook pros in my department all bought in 2005 and an iMac at the same time. Again no problems. If you've had problems sorry to hear that.
