The only way to get a cheaper Mac is to get a student to buy it.0

There is nothing magical about Unix that makes it immune to viruses. Consider the Morris worm.Microsoft uses a technology that needs replacing Windows 7 is still old underneath.
Because Unix is brand new? C'mon. You can do better than that. Windows 7 is based on the Windows NT kernel, but has substantially evolved from that, much as modern Unixes have evolved from where they were 20 years ago. I think a lot of Windows infrastructure could use updating but age doesn't prove anything. In fact if you're saying Windows 7 is based because it's old then don't forget that Unix is older.
Operating system wars are tiresome and childish, but if you must have one can you at least attempt to base it on something that can't be de-constructed in a few moments by someone who actually advocates for the same type of computer that you do?If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
UNIX still holds its own and Microsoft uses technology that should catch up.
I didn't say it was immune to viruses I said it was less prone.
What causes Windows to be more prone is that the operating system can act like the user so viruses can run automatically that is why you now get prompted over and over as to whether to run anything new or downloaded.
UNIX on the other hand doesn't do that, the user has control.
This is a very basic explanation.
Also UNIX has evolved.
I hope you're not suggesting that Windows is a superior OS.
And if anyone is wondering if you want price and Mac OS, get the right specced PC and do what we did in the office, run Mac OS X on it. What you are looking for is a machine with the same spec especially processor and graphics card of a Mac. Even done this on a netbook needed to get a graphics driver to make that one work, it as an Asus netbook. Loads of instructions on how to do this online.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. As for catching up, where is the Windows quality font engine for Unix OSes? Why do Unix OSes all use a local server to provide print services? Also UNIX has evolved.

Oh no. I'm suggesting that operating system advocacy is tiresome, your original reply contradicted itself in a few places, and overall displayed ignorance when it comes to matters of operating system design and behaviour. Your additional reply provides further evidence of that by the way.
When one is in a hole, one should really stop digging. For God's sake stop digging will you! How old are you, 12?If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -

Congrats, I have letters after my name too, much the same ones as yours actually. As at least one of us is mistaken on some issues, those letters obviously don't prove anything, do they?If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
Roberto, if I've offended I'm sorry. But let's call it a truce on this one.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

Cheap Apples don't exist...
He's a pretty sad individual if he's willing to pay a grand extra just for the look of it, imho. My advice to you would be to talk some sense into him.
I wasnt asking for a cheap apple. I was asking if there were any stockists where it could be purchased cheaper. He just likes nice things and if we can afford it then its up to him really isnt it? I was just trying to do a bit of moneysaving if I could but if he really wants one then I aint going to object.
I dont need advice from you in the manner offered thanks.:smileyhea0 -
Your OH needs to think clearly about how best to spend his money. I'm very pro Mac, but only for the right reasons. From what you say, your OH is wanting one for the wrong reasons.
If he really does want a "shiny Apple" to play with, consider an iPad. It'll have the shiny Apple logo on, it will do what he wants it to do (assuming on the rare occasion he uses a laptop, it's for surfing the web and smaller tasks rather than photoshopping for example), and it will cost a lot less than a MacBook Pro (£430-£700 depending on which one he wants) saving you money.
Bottom line: based on what you've said, your OH shouldn't be looking to get a new laptop, Apple or not.
Thanks for your advice. All I really wanted to know was whether they could be purchased cheaper elsewhere and I guess the answer is no.
Thanks to everyone who responded.:smileyhea0
