Window Restricter! Again no idea what I am looking for

Options
Hi,

I seem to be having an inept DIY day. I am after a locking window restricter that opens to about 10cm max. (its to let the cat come and go as she pleases out the window) but without having the fear of some one coming in through the window.

So really I am after something that I can lock from the inside and that does not have a release system so that anyone can stick their arm through the window and just remove it.

My window opens like this,

If that is any help and is UPVC.

you could drill a small hole in the slide chassis and insert a screw. that would stop the slide going too far.
your only problem is that when you need the window wide open, you will need a screwdriver to remove/replace the screw.
    Get some gorm.

You want something like the Jackloc Lockable Window/Door Restrictor. Under £20 and can be adjusted to 10 to 15cm opening with key lock.

    jackloc[dot]com/products

or search for google for a supplier near you

There are other solutions. Use the search function on ironmongerydirect to search for the word restrictor.

    Here's another style: http://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/Products/Locks_Latches_and_Security/Door_and_Window_Security/826/Concealed_Window_Restrictor___Locking

the ironmongery one does say for either top or side hung casings so yes it would be suitable. Having seen these at my mums house I would say they wouldn't be that difficult for a burglar to remove if he had something like a crowbar. Not sure what the burglar's implement of choice is these days but don't think I'd want to leave it t chance. These things are a best a piece of metal 1-2mm thick!

If a burglar comes equipped with a crowbar it is unlikely that anything you have done will stop him getting in. Whether or not your windows are secured shut or fixed partially open.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Yes, but an insurer will often want proof of forced entry. A flimsy window restrictor is hardly going to give the proof required!

Not sure if you are referring to Jackloc, but if so, these are not flimsy restrictors.

We have them on all windows. They are fully approved by insurance companies and are installed on many commercial buildings, hotels, etc as well as private homes.

Although our windows lock, we have these on as extra security so that we can open the windows for fresh air, but not worry that they have been left open if we are out.

Behappy, How much do they let you open then window as i would really need a gap of about 5 inches max, my cat is tiny.

It is really only to be for when I am in the property, I would never go out and leave the window open, i just dont want to be asleep and for someone to easily get in the window, I want to make it a little harder for them, thats all. You cant tell me in this weather that no one sleeps with the window open?
