Lloyds have introduced them for business accounts. Possibly as a test run to introduce them for personal accounts.

Personally, I don't like the card reader as it slows the whole process down. However, its not a deal breaker.

  • I like the approach that RBS/NatWest follows for this, the card reader is required to set-up a new Payee and then to make a payment for the first time only.

Provides adequate security to me - Would only be able to see my statements otherwise and not much to view on that really :D

Thing to do is to stop using their website and go into branch they will get overloaded in branch because they have cut it too the bone because of the use of the web.

Rather silly that the card reader is bigger than the phone I would use to access their site on the go!

Or for everyone to email them asking them to stop the use of it as it stops the web being used in the way it should.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

No, they stop the web from being used in the way it shouldn't, i.e. for fraud.

I'd like to see your evidence for that statement.

Just to be clear - you don't believe the card readers help eliminate fraud?

Or are you making another argument?

    I'm with Nat West (RBS).
I have to use a card reader to set up a payment and make the first one.
After that I don't have to use it.

I don't think this should be a major criteria for choosing your bank.
    It's not that hard.

Quite right less secure than knowing something personal about me the thieves will break it and use it they have everything else. It is a reliance on technology to protect technology and yes the Internet was never meant for fraud but ten I can't park my bike without worrying about some thief nicking bits off it.

These things (especially the way Nationwide use them) are a hinderence on my lifestyle the thieves have won.

I don't need to provide evidence. It's fairly obvious that if a bank requires two-factor authentication in order to set up a new payee, then it prevents phishing. It's no coincidence that of all the phishing e-mails I receive, they're all targeting banks that don't use two-factor authentication, particularly Halifax and HSBC.

But it is not obvious that these provide any more safety than not.

Oh and can we please make sure that what you say is directed at Nationwide and no other bank as with the Nationwide you do not have to use this device once you use it everytime. They want you to use it to log into thir website everytime you want to make a payment. If it was just wehn setting up then it would be okish but the way the Nationwide use it stops their website being usable on the go.
