Click at "Places" on the upper bar and then "Home Folder". In the pane on the left side you will see all available drives. Click on them one by one until you see your files in the main window.0 -
Hi
If you're running Ubuntu from the LiveCD.
Click on 'Places' at the top of the screen.
This will show a list of options.
Look for one that says something like '39 GB Filesystem'.
(Or whatever the size of the hard drive is).
This will then show the Windows folders.
Probably it's 'Documents and Settings' then 'Administrator' or whatever.
When you've found the files you want to keep, right-click 'Copy' and paste to a USB memory drive.
(The USB drive should also show up in 'Places' when it's plugged in.Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
Thankyou, found the files now. In the computer part it says, 82gb hardisc +++ but it also says '200 gb hard disc new volume' with a usb icon over it then theres acd/dvd drive and then the file system all the files are on the 82 GB harddrive. Could the 200 gb disc be a 2nd hardrive? if it is I was going to just copy all the files to that drive rather than a usb. Inside that new volume drive it does have something in it they are 8 orange files and 2 others autorun.inf and setupsnk.exe. We dont hve a usb connected unless its the modem or monitor. There was 2 hardrives inside but the erson that gave the pc to my daughter said he thought it was a partition, I was hoping it might show up as a hardrive though so we could transfer the files over to it, could it be that?Thanx

Hi
I don't know what drives are fitted to that computer.
It would be easiest to buy a USB memory stick and plug it in. Copy the files onto it.
At least they will be safe before you start trying to fix the fault.Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -

Can you open a terminal by going to Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal and type insudo fdisk -l0 -
Please just fix the problem with the Master Boot Record as I indicated, rather than messing around with the backing up of files at this stage.0
