Can I just ask, she has got another old pc and we were going to put the faulty hardrive in it as a 2nd hardrive to get the files transferred. Once we have transferred the files would it be possible to try and repair the windows on the faulty hardrive while its a 2nd hardrive in the tower before putting it back into its own tower? She just has one monitor there for now so it would save a lot of messing around disconnecting everything as its all in a tight corner space in a cabinate?Thanx

You'd probably mess up the registry and drive assignments by doing that as well.
TBH, it's easier just to reinstall windows after putting the suspected 'faulty' drive back into the original tower0 -
We have swapped boot up to cd and now are going to try downloading the free ubunto to disc to try and save the files then go onto try and repair it with the repair disc after we download that
I havent a clue how to do it really so just hoping for the bestThanx

Yes you can connect the faulty drive as a 2nd drive in order to backup the files, but don't bother trying to repair it from there. Don't keep it in there as a second drive either as it will probably fail again and in doing so you could have a crash that means you have to erase the first disk!
For this reason, personally I would prefer the Ubuntu method, i.e. run Ubuntu off a CD then copy your important files onto a USB stick. Also, it means no mucking about inside the PC plugging in drives. Well all you need to do is, after you have copied your files, unplug the old one and plug in the replacement.
Depends on you whether to try putting it back in as the boot drive and giving it another go with a fresh install (which personally, I'd favour over the RescueDisk, but YMMV). It may be a one-off, in which case this might save you the cost of a new drive, but, fwor is right chances are that it will fail again and sometimes it's better to cut your losses.0 -
Another possibility is a faulty or loose ide cable. Try unplugging and refitting the ide cable or swapping it.0

I have downloaded ubunto from the site to my desktop and want to burn it to the disc but when I click on the downloaded ubunto it says
windows cannot open this file
to open this file windows needs to know what program created it. windows can go online to look it up automatically or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer
what do you want to do
1- use the webservice to find apt program
2- select the program from list
Not sure which to choose as it has to be right to burn this to disc so it works properly straight away when trying to boot up with this on the faulty pc
Edit
I have tried to burn the cd with the infra recorder software suggested on the ubuntu site and it tells me to select ubunto image file click open and then ok in dialog box but the same thing keeps popping up above, I tried to select explorer from the list and it doesnt work so I cant burn ubunto to cdThanx

Thanks I think that has worked as a window popped up after it finished saying try ubuntu before buying, I clicked cancel because this is the laptop but will try it on daughters pc tomorrow. Hope its going to work, how long is the trial for just in case we have any probs with having enough discs for storage?
Once this is done do we have to download and run the repair disc or use a windows disc to repair from that or completely reinstal windows?
I have a windows xp-pro disk but hers is winxp I also have a winxp disc that came with a pre installed laptop thats never been opened could that be used but just put in her own windows id number?Thanx

Hi
There is no TRIAL PERIOD for Ubuntu.
It's free.
The message probably said 'Try Ubuntu before INSTALLING'.
That's the option to use. Just a trial, not an installation.
It would have been OK to test it on your laptop too.
When you've finished it doesn't leave any remnants on your computer.Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
If the boot up with ubuntu is succesful will we be able to find her windows xp serial number as she doesnt have a record of it and if we reinstal windows its better that she uses her own numberThanx
