Wedding ring broken :(

We got married on 5 November 2008 and my husband's gold band broke. I have attached a link to the ring so you can see what I mean. The silver part has split away from the gold.

We've taken the ring back to the jewellers and they sent it off for analysis. The ring has come back and it cannot be fixed and they said out of goodwill they are willing to give my husband a £100 voucher to replace the ring. The ring cost us £80 18 months ago and to replace it now it would cost £199.
I'm really upset that the ring we bought and that was blessed on our day has only lasted 18 months. Surely a wedding ring should last longer than that!! Do we have any rights to ask for a like for like. Ideally I wanted the ring we got married with to be repaired but as they cannot do that I don't think it's fair that they just fob us off with a voucher that won't get us the same ring as the price of gold has risen so much. I'm also upset that we won't get to keep our ring too.:(

Unfortunately they have gone above and beyond what they need to do, they could just give you the £80 back. Or if they were trying to be awkward they could ask you do get an indepedant report as the product went faulty after 6 months of purchase. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

why not keep the broken band if it has as much sentiment as it does and buy maybe a titanium or tungsten ring? they are very hard wearing and quite cheap too.would love to win an ipad!

Could you have the ring re-made ie melted down and reshaped. Or made into a pendant or something.
LIke another poster says, i think the only obligation they have is to refund you the original price, make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
take the gesture and ask for repair quotes elsewhere?Back by no demand whatsoever.0

I think there is an element of 'extra' compensation here. Clearly a wedding ring is (or should be!) an enjoyable item and its defective nature should give rise to a modest extra payment.0

Maybe and they gave an extra 25% value, I don't think you can ask for more really. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

hhhmmm...I used to work for the company and I have to say I think they're being fiarly reasonable on this...you could try asking nicely if they'd replace the ring (like for like).
What kind of work does your husband do? If it's manual work he would be better off getting something like a titanium ring.0 -

The extra doesn't necessarily have a bearing on how much the item cost.0 -

No, but I think you would agree that if this ever went to court (which it is not likely) that an offer of the money back plus 25% in vouchers goes above and beyond the call of dutyThe Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

No I don't necessarily think so.
The purchase of a wedding ring is clearly a pleasurable thing to do and people become sentimentally attached. It's a contract for enjoyment.
If it becomes defective, I think that it is only fair to be compensated for the distress and disappointment.0
