Can You Claim Anything When Between School & Uni?

My A-level exams start fully in 5 days. It's commonly said that this is the most educationally intense and stressful time period anyone faces in the normal British education system. I could look for work, yes, but for now, I'd rather just focus any intellectual effort on academia.
In answer to your questions - next summer, and the summers after that, I will probably be in university with a job. And yes, although I'm not sure you realise that.
.
exams start in 5 days,so what have you been doing?
your not in school and havent been studying all day
Im sure you can rationalise your excuses, that you deserve to sit back and concentrate on studying for those scary A levels. then the tax payer can support you for 10 weeks
however you knew this was coming
yet feel now is the time to think about how to deal with it? (or at least who is going ot subsidise you)
In your time bleating here, have you looked on the job sites, gumtree for part time jobs?0 -

I made no assumptions about cost, but since you've obviously done your research, I'd be genuinely interested to see the numbers for that claim?0 -
Why are you so sure you won't get a job? You post with such confidence, I'm sure you could apply that confidence to your job hunt. And you must think about the long run, when you finish your degree employers will look to see that you have applied yourself in the holidays. Getting a work history now will really help you in the future.I'm not going to make JSA a last option - it's what it says on the tin - cash if you're seeking a job but can't find one. I'd gladly work if I found a job July-Oct. If I did find work, would my parents child benefits/child tax credit stop?
Having a degree won't give you a job, you've still got to put the effort in and have the motivation. If you can't do that now, I would be a little worried about how you will cope when you finish university and have 25k of debt.
When I was in school and through university my brother and I would compete to see who could get the best summer job in our small town!
Any bit of motivation is worth while! 0 -
Thanks all. My uni starts in October so I can claim JSA for a few weeks. For now the benefits my parents receive for me are more than JSA so..
Don't make the assumption that this is the first question I asked - it most certainly isn't.
Christ, make a foolish post trying to look smart/funny and get thirteen thanks for it?
How utterly depressing.
Just ignore the as5 wipes like victory! :rotfl::D
(He works as a toilet cleaner in macdonalds and so hates anyone who gets more in benefits than he does in his job)
And to answer your original question-
Yes you can claim jsa from now till whenever you choose to end your claim for it!:o
All the people saying you cant because you are going to uni is total complete crap and nonsense and so jusgt ignore them!!
As theres no such thing in as ''going to uni before your course even starts''.
The reality is that you have now finished 6th form,
theres a university course that will start in 4months time which you like the look of and so are thinking of doing once it starts in october,
but for these next 4months you are an adult aged 18+ whos unemployed and looking for a fulltime job.
So you are 100% entitled to claim the maximum amount of jsa, housing benefit, council tax benefit, and any other benefits that you are entitled to!
You have no legal obligation whatsoever to even mention tha university course that you like the look of to the jobcentre!!
As until the 1st day of that course when you walk into uni and start the course, you are NOT on the course,
and so are unemployed and looking for a fulltime job.
If you get a job now you may decide to quit it in 3-4months time and instead go and do a university course,
you may decide that you love the job so much that you no longer wish to go on that uni course,
you may decide that you want to quit the job but not go to uni either even...
So until that day in October when you actually start tha uni course you are NOT a student,
and so can claim the maximum rate of jsa!
(And at £206 per month x 4months you will be able to start uni with an extra £800 cash onto of all your grants and student loans,
which will give you an extra £25 cash ever single week, week after week, for your entire 1sy year, to spend on drinking and having fun!)

Btw Simmed the date that you will start getting paid your JSA from will be the date that your claim is registered on their system (not your 1st sign-on)-
So i would advise that you put your claim in the same day that you finish your final A-level exam (as you would never be returning to your school after that day as have no reason to)
To make your claim online which is the best and easiest way just fill in the forms through the DWP webiste for it-

Firey is incorrect - you are still classed as being in full time education until 31st August - hence the reason your parents receive their child benefit and tax credits for you. If your parents receive child maintenance for you, they will also receive this until 31st August. Final payments for CTC and CB are the first Monday in September, as these are paid in arrears. Final payment of CM might be slightly different, depending on the date of payment, but is also usually paid in arrears (always in arrears if through CSA).
If you decide to claim JSA, these payments to your parents will stop. The Job Centre will be able to advise you on whether you can claim JSA, but are likely to advise you that you are still classed as being in full time education. You will not be able to claim housing benefit if you live at home. I assume your parents pay council tax anyway.
Firey, please check you facts - and don't be so rude about other posters.0 -
My 18 old year son has just finished first year at St. Andrews.
Support everything Kingfisherblue has stated - JSA is not payable to school leavers until end of August. School leavers have not been able to claim benefits for many years.
My son worked after leaving school until starting uni and starts again on Monday (after having a whole week off lol) until September.0 -
My 16 year old is looking for a summer job (or part time term time job) once her GCSEs are finished but is already doing this. She updated her CV and we spent about an hour in town going around shops/businesses and handing it in. About 2/3 accepted it, one gave her the name of the manager to call and another told her to come back in September (as it was a ski shop, which would be her preference). She was asked if she'd accept a job as a cleaner in a health club (and surprisingly said yes). She wouldn't be starting a job until after her last exam but hopefully, she's got in early and something will come of this.
None of this took more than a couple of hours including the CV.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -
My daughter found a job with an agency - she now combines that with studying with the OU. She is a care assistant, earning at least £6.45 an hour before deductions - not too bad for a nineteen year old.0

Unless your parents are actually giving you the child benefit money that they receieve,
then if i were you id claim jsa myself as itd be cash in hard for me then.
Also you can choose to move into your own flat if you want, as you will have the entire rent and council paid for you by housing benefit.
(To check the rates in your area just google LHA)0
