as far as the OP is concerned the advice to use their union as intermediaries is what they should be doing; whilst acknowledging that they have no money management skills and should therefore also talk to the financial aid people at the union and get a lesson on life skills including how to budget, take responsibility, and manage a bank account.

    Amen to that.

Clutton, I understand your stance on this, but you should not have assumed that the uni would automatically assume the same position (immediate lump sum payment). OP should at least ask whether any regular repayment is available.

    fair comment

RE arrears - i work on the basis of starting off asking for a lump sum repayment, then i can always back down to an "agreed arrears repayment schedule" position

if i started off from the "agreed arrears repayment schedule" position - the only backing down i can then do is to agree £1.01 p per week for 19 years.......

Although I agree that the OP should have noticed that the rent was not going out of their account, I do think that some people are being harsh here. Plenty of people do not check their bank statements and just carry on regardless, including many that are old enough to know better!

Although it is not entirely the university's fault, their admin seems to have slipped up somehow and rather than put THEIR student in hardship, it is only reasonable that they allow him/her to pay off the arrears over a reasonable period of time. As someone else has suggested, the SU welfare officer should be able to help with this - it will not be the first time something like this has happened, and it certainly won't be the last!

It is easy to criticise students, but when the older ones among us went to uni, we got grants to cover living expenses and tuition fees - now they only get debt!

The OP probably won't be back after all that has been said (I wouldn't), but if he/she does read this, I hope you get it sorted out ok.

The university is not there to manage the OP's finances. If the OP doesn't bother to read their bank statements whose to say they bothered to read their accomodation paperwork and complete and return the DD or SO form?] and rather than put THEIR student in hardship [LOL. Noone put the OP in financial hardship than the OP. If the money wasn't leaving their account they shouldn't have spent it. End of.], it is only reasonable that they allow him/her to pay off the arrears over a reasonable period of time. [Largely, the law disagrees with you.]

OP, Sorry but I am one of the harsh ones. You've gotten yourself into this, go and see your university advisor and ask them for help but be humble and accept that this situation is entirely of your own doing. Stop blaming everyone else.

It was worth a punt asking!

ok, time to own up... I did know the payments had not been coming out. Not instantly mind you so during this time I did overspend. I guess it's better to look dishonest than stupid!

I am very grateful to those who have contributed a constructive comment and those who genuinely tried to help. But to those who made a clear attempt to belittle and bully should question why they bothered to respond at all.

I maintain that it was the uni's fault. While I accept I also have a responsibility to keep an eye on my account, it was the uni's job to take payments. I fulfilled my side of the agreement by giving my bank details and permission to take the money, it was their job to do so.

Like I say I told a few porkies in my original post so as it happens I do have enough to pay it, my inquiry was simply a cheeky shot in the dark.
I never proclaimed it was my right or demanding a reduction. That was the whole point in asking the question.

Despite the noises from the old, wise and lonely on this site, it isn't always possible to know instantly if the payments haven't been taken so as a result I think I suffered some hardship because I believed I had more money to spend than I actually did. Again no big deal, but it's worth a mention.

So as it transpires my situation isn't as fatal as you first thought so luckily all my new bessie mates need not lose too much sleep!
Anyone up for the pub again?!
  • I don't suppose there's much point in asking about pension provision just yet?

    Enjoy........ everything!...... While you can.

Debt collection actions against students who are currently attending uni is often a very soft approach because many HEI have to balance commercial pressures against the academic's view that nothing should be done to impact on a student’s ability to study during term time. Therefore many HEI do not actively chase a missed payment during termtime - that is not their "fault", it is their policy.
I cannot speak for your HEI, but here all we do is send a reminder to the parents home address each vacation to see if they will then embarrass you into paying up (obviously the debt is yours not theirs, but this often works!). However, if at the end of the year you have still not paid, you will find you are barred from re-registering next year until you pay up (which can be by instalments – but at our discretion).

Rubbish, it can take until next day for your balance to be adjusted - big deal - this is what is meant by budget management, when the money actually goes out is not what counts, the knowledge that it will surely go out eventually does, therefore you spend what you know you have left over after all regular amounts are deducted from your income, not what the hole in the wall dispenses when you ask it for some more.
I hope that when you have a mortgage you do not try that tack as you will end up being repossessed. Uni is soft, the real world is not

""I think I suffered some hardship" - give me strength.....

""I maintain that it was the uni's fault."

humility is clearly not a trait you even begin to understand, let alone to have... god help your employer and future landlords....

what a thoroughly arrogant young pup.... and stupid.... cant - even now - admit its his fault... i'm out of here....

00ec25, why must you be so defensive? I hope you can learn to lighten up one day.
Stop patronising. You have no idea who I am, don't presume to know what sort of life I lead. I don't live in a soft uni bubble as your stereotypical, chip on your shoulder mind would like to imagine. Before going to Uni I was working 50 hours a week whilst caring for my disabled father.
What’s more it my prerogative to spend my money as I like. I was seeking a friendly response to a friendly question. I wasn’t after a physco- analytical judgement on all my fiscal issues.

It appears that you were completely dishonest or intentionally misleading in your first post so I think it's a bit rich to object to other poster's opinions now
