Thank you zip,for your recipes and ideas and penny for your explanations.Sorry for not replying sooner,I was too tired after work.
It's interesting to understand a bit more about these process that we take for granted-the wonder that is bread!
I have visited Ireland so have had soda farls there, but I have also bought them in Scotland and England, but can't remember where.I seem to remember buying them once in M&S.I would love to try making them.
:j:j:jI now have taken possession of the breadmaker-it's a Kenwood BM300.Apparently it's only been used once.My friend said to try it first, pay later.
I'll try it tomorrow,as I need to get some ingredients first.
Bye for now0 -
Don't worry about the delayed reply. Some people never come back
:rotfl:
Oh great news! Can't find it listed on the Kenwood site, but the 350 should be near it, so there is instructions here if you need them (or do you have them?)
It is really interesting- for me a learning process too (but then on here i learn new things several times a day) There was a programme on the other night on BBC about the search for the perfect loaf, must see if i can watch it on iplayer - assuming you can't?
let us know how you get on making soda bread - it's yummy! :j
Oh, and when you try the breadmaker too! If you need us to look you out any threads in preparation just ask - or "i searched but couldn't find anything" is a great thread with very helpful tools on teaching you how to search (although you may have already mastered it of course - it took me AGES!:o)A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

I had a look on the Swiss Kenwood site for this model, but they don't list it either.
I do have the instructions thanks.
I can get British TV channels here.Funny that you mention 'In Search of The Perfect Loaf'.I've recorded it,but haven't watched it yet.
Can't wait to try out the BM tomorrow!0 -
Oh that's cool you can get the channels! How ignorant of me to assume you couldn't:o
There you go - great minds think alike!Full report expected on first BM experience, and good luck! :j:j:j:j:j:j

:j:j Well,I'm very pleased to report that my first loaf in the Breadmaker has been a success!
I made a large brown loaf and it is done to perfection.
I was surprised that I had to put in less yeast than if I was doing it by hand.I followed the quantities to the letter, apart from substituting sunflower oil for butter.
I think I'm well and truly hooked!0 -

Fantastic! :j Any pics?can't beat that fresh bread taste. Did you do the obligatory of pulling chunks out to cover with butter when it's hot (or is that just me:o)

Sorry no pictures-all that is just beyond me.
I was very good-I waited an hour before cutting the loaf. It's dangerous to leave bread lying around uncovered in my house,as I have a wee cat whose nickname is 'The Phantom Bread Licker'.Luckily she was curled up asleep.
My heart was in my mouth as I cut into the loaf,as the top felt too soft.I was dreading it being not properly cooked all the way through.
I'm looking forward to trying other kinds of bread.
oh happy day...simple pleasures!0 -
It's so exciting isn't it?! What's next?
Usually home made bread is better sliced the next day - at least machine stuff is anyway)or it just falls apart)

Sorry for the delay in replying.
The bread is lovely, though it's difficult to cut thinnish slices cos it's such a big loaf.
I might make a smaller one next time, wholemeal I think. Then I'd love to make one with seeds in.
Thanks.0
