Savvy_Sue wrote:Spikey this does seem like a great idea, just be aware in your responses - and your work! - that you are only ever going to get one side of the story at a time.
There was recently a series on BBC West called "Someone to Watch Over Me", which was basically 'fly on the wall' following children's social workers. I was full of admiration for them: there are times when it is a ghastly and difficult job, with the families involved often very suspicious and mistrustful, but on the whole they handled themselves and the situations they faced brilliantly.
But through work I've sometimes seen and heard the family's perspective, and you would not know you were dealing with the same professionals ...
All the best!
Thank you for your reply... you are right. I can only give the best advice possible if people are honest and straight with me...
SpikeyUse your judgement, and above all, be honest with yourself.I walk with the world & the world walks with me!I don't make bad choices!!! Other people just fail to see my GENIUS !!!!0 -

This is a great idea Spikey, and I really can not add much more than the above posters.
But this will work out very beneficial for you and for the people requesting advice/help.:)
I'm sure I have a list of stuff you can help me with, I will just have to double check it all;)
Only kidding.:)0 -

Hi Spikey,
What exactly does the above mean?
Have you cleared this with your employers?
Has anyone seen proof of your qualifications?

I am even more cynical but how would we know you were any good, qualifications or not? Also how woould someone prove that you are the person listed on a website?0 -
Hi Spikey
You said you were a social worker / counsellor. I think you need to clarify for everyone your specific qualifications in each field as I feel there could be a blurring of boundaries between the two.
I also feel that you need to specify to people what the specific disclosures are that you can not guarantee confidentiality on and which professional body guildlines you are following for each field. Are you a member of BACP or some other body etc?
You also say you could give direct help outside of this forum, you need therefore to state what your fees are and the conditions, boundaries etc.
I'm hoping I don't sound to critical but I felt concerned for you when I read your post it sounded very vague. I'm in the same field and would never do this for the following reasons
1) The members need some protection in case they have a complaint - you could become liable as Martin is bearing no responsibility. You need to give members a complaints proceedure or addresses.
2) When it comes to counselling via the net which by the way i think it will become, you need specific training because its not face to face counselling
3) I can't believe your employers will allow this.
4) You need to protect yourself you don't know who you are dealing with.
5) You need insurance and look into the legal side.
6) What about record keeping
There are loads of things
I think if you were to give factual information on the social work side only you may be ok but I would not involving counselling or I think you may land yourself with alot of responsibilty and problems.
My opinion is meant in the nicest possible way, your intention is, I feel very genuine and well meant but please consider it carefully.
Best wishes

I think what Spikey is offering is a nice gesture, but i agree with what others are saying . it would be a shame to see Spikey get himself into something that could get him or others into hot water?? But i am sure everyone appreciates what he is trying to do.
Davesmum.xxI think therefore i am....not TOTALLY thick!!!0 -

My interpretation of that is,
total confidentiality will be maintained but there will be an exception to the rule;
eg; should a case arise whereby a child is in danger/ suspected of being abused, Spikey would have to disclose confidential information to the relevant authorities for investigation.Laughter is the sun

My other concern would be safety on the internet. We drum it into our children not to divulge personal information via chat rooms etc as who knows who or what the person is that is reading.
From a simple email address or user name a great deal of information can be gained that you may not even be aware you are disclosing let alone your personal problems.0
