Hi. I'm glad you've passed as many people are being failed at the moment. I also passed my first medical with flying colours, yet i've been failed on my second one even though my conditions haven't changed. I'm just telling you in advance so can be equipped for the next ATOS medical, as they invariably seem to be set up for people to fail in my opinion. All the best. I was moved from IS in March and had to apply for ESA.
Had my medical on the 26/5 and have just received a letter telling me i have limited capability for work and will continue to receive ESA.
Im so relieved as i was sure i would have to appeal.
Im still kind of shocked to be honest!!:j0 -
Thanks for that information, how long apart were your medicals?0

It is a shame that some people need to say nasty things on a thread like this one,its quite easy for people to say things on the internet that they wouldnt be brave enough to say face to face.
What saddens me is that there are many people on this particular forum who are nothing but helpful and give nothing but good advice, unfortunately their good work is undermined by idiots, the behaviour of these who are in the minority does put some people off asking for advice, and this shouldnt be the case.0 -
Great post. How can someone been happy about being found to ill to work.. NO wonder the country is in such a state:D
I work for the DWP and yes I deal with esa claims. Most of the claimants I deal with are people whose SSP has run out. People who have never before claimed a benefit in their life. Stunned that having a brain tumour and hospitalised with it was no excuse not to attend a medical (oh yes it has happened). So you should remember that anytime that claimant could be you. Disability or life threatening illness can strike anyone.
Then you can moan how the country is in such a state because the contributions you have paid for 30 odd years means nothing when you are claiming for a few months benefit while fighting illness.0 -

Great post, I was on ESA and am now thankfully back at work, I had a total of 33 years of contributions and it really hurt me to read some of the posts on this forum slating people on benefits. Until it happens to you you cannot know what it is like. It is bad enough being unwell and then there is the added stess of the ATOS medical.0 -
Thankyou OP , I too am waiting for a spinal fusion, decompression and bone graft on my back which is due anyday now , just waiting for the date , I am on the assesment rate of ESA and am waiting for the medical date .

My husband was in exactly the category you mention - always worked from the age of 15 (with just four years out to train to be a teacher). He was then dogged by a chronic condition from 1990, however for most of that time he managed to stay at work (with some periods of sick leave) and only claimed Incapacity Benefit in 2004 when he took early retirement from teaching at the age of 55 because he could not carry on any longer.
Most people on sickness Benefits have worked, in fact under the old Incapacity Benefit you did not get it UNLESS you had worked -you got Income Support instead.
I hope the OP is able to have the operations soon.
As for the unhelpful remarks, people should be aware that long- term sickness or disability can happen to anyone, no-one is immune.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
We all may have our opinions about IB and ESA and whether the rules are too strict or not strict enough - it's just that dropping nasty comments on the head of someone here asking for help is not the place to express them. There is one - the "Debate" forum where it's no holds barred (within reason).0
