Actually, [STRIKE]I think[/STRIKE] you're right. I prefer it though. Nothing worse than having to pop the bonnet, open a bit of the fuel pipe and try and give it a sharp blow, avoiding the petrol mouth blowback.:D

Fair to say that was it's only fault though.

W124 E class merc, perfect for wafting around and you can line up the chavs through the emblem on the bonnet and pretend you're in a messerschmitt :D, you should be able to find a fair condition one for £2k. Not much in the way of toys but they have aged quite well.

A £2000 BMW or Audi just says "chav" and as others have stated will almost certainly be a poorly maintained wreck.

Oddball suggestion: Subaru Legacy Turbo. Bit of a marmite car, especially the really old ones, but lots of fun and unlike it's younger brother they tend not to be owned by idiots.

A £30k car will always have the running costs of a £30k car, tailored to the budget of the sort of person who has £30k to spend on a car... just because the car depreciates to nothing, doesn't mean the running costs will.

£2k could get you a top-spec Rover 75 V6 / MG ZT 160 (2.5 V6 model). Tax is a bit on the expensive side, though (if you get a post-2001 one)

With 3 kids on car, safety should be first priority while deciding on cars.

Make sure car has properly working pre-tensioned seat belts and not too old. Airbags in 10-yr or older cars may not be that effective.

Try buying a newer car as possible albeit a smaller car. Newer smaller cars are safer than old bangers!
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Hi all, in a similar vein we are looking to help our son get his first car. We have around £3K( more if needed) and he wants something with a cheap road tax, so smallish engine. I have had quotes from Insurance up to a 1.4 engine so we have an idea there what costs will be but I was reading that this April some car tax is now only £20, some £30 then it goes to £90.00, is this for all cars or just new ones? My daughter has an Aygo which was £35.00 a year. So far he was thinking along the lines of Peugot 206/ Vauxhall Corsa/ Renault Clio. Cars we have looked at which are quite new have high mileage whilst older cars have lower mileage, as someone who knows nothing about cars, what is your advice? Thanks.

    err no
£30k cars new don't always incur huge repair bills their £30k new
and built to a higher standard than most run of the mill cars

for instance my 10 year old bmw 525i sport has done 160k drives like its done 60k and has no squeaks or rattles.
all i've done in the 4 years i've had it is replace 8 tyres front discs and pads and one wheel bearing

Not necessarily, many of the parts used on a top of the range car are the same as used on cheaper models. And there are always independent specialists and suppliers who can get parts cheaper than from dealers.

Get an Alfa 166, even Clarkson thinks they're better than the BMW 5 Series. A nice 3.0 V6 - £2k will get you a nice one, dodgy ones are under a grand.
