Sometimes the "sensible" head need putting away for once LOL
Whatever you choose I would say have a look on the owners club sites (via Google) as most have a for sale section and you will get one that hopefully has been looked after a bit better, they also tend to know the real value of the car so ask a realistic price.Totally Debt Free & Mortgage Free Semi retired and happy0 -
Take a look at the Saab 93 (petrol) my son has had a couple in the £2,000 range and they have been great cars, so much so that we bought a new one (now 4 years old) and love it as well.
The Saab 9-3 (not 93) is the same car underneath as the C series VX Vectra
Many of the parts are interchangable with the obvious exception of body panelsThank you Indout at last someone not just saying NO DON'T DO IT as if having an older car is the worst thing ever!!!!!!
Your very correct, nothing wrong with an older car.... The yearly cost of repairs very rarely tops the depreciation of a new car.--Consumerism --

If you want to get a bmw for £2000 then go ahead and search for it. If you have time to wait for a decent one to appear then a 1999 318SE can be bought for your budget. What you have to make sure is that the car has been regularly service. In 2005 I got a 9 years old bmw 318IS auto coupe for £2050 from ebay. This car was well looked after by the owner, I didn't need to spend any money on it apart from changing 1 tyre and yearly oil and filter change, although I do low mileage around 4000 miles a year. 18 months later I had a minor accident, car got written off and was paid £2850 - £100 excess = £2750 from the insurance company. It was a bargain deal at the time.
Another car you could look at is the Lexus is200.0 -

Nice cars, I wanted one for years.... But remember that 2001 cars are worth more than 2002-2003 cars though because the IS200 with it's 2 litre V6, sits in the maximum emissions based tax bracket, which only applies to cars registered after 2001.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Late model Ford Scorpio if you can stand the looks. Nice, cheap and well equipped luxo barges. Some of them aren't slouches when you press the loud pedal either.0

My brother bought a 5 series BMW a few months ago, v reg, 160,000 miles+, full service history, full leather, air con, 5 disc cd changer even has the original car phone (still works) was owned by an enthusiast and replaced with the newer shape. He and his wife love it, drives like new and the two girls love the room they have in the back. It's not the most economical car but he knew this when he was looking for one, he had a 328 coupe but the kids kept complaining about leg room.
He has to drive a 'sensible' car everyday for work, he's a taxi driver and owns a Skoda Octavia,
but he loves his BM's and would always choose a BMW over a Mondeo/Vectra type car.
Have a good look on Autotrader and choose carefully, make sure it's got the right pedigree.

I don't think you could go far wrong with a big Volvo. Try the V70 (estate car) or the S80 (Saloon). Buy carefully and they will last forever and provide plenty of comfort and be well equipped.Mortgage free
Vocational freedom has arrived0 -
A Volvo S70/S80/S90 or something like would be a good suggestion. They are dirt cheap because they have zero image but much posher and better built than any BMW you can get that price. You would easily be able to get a 2000 model with FSH etc for £2k.
Personaly though for £2k I would consider a Mondeo Ghia X.0 -
Avoid MB's at that price, chances are they'll be riddled with rust.
BMW 5 series got to be one of the best contenders but don't rule out a sensible mileage Lexus 400, it'll drink juice but if it's been serviced proper like and hasn't been neglected then it should be pretty bombproof,as would a Toyota Camry...Lexus quality but without the badge.0
