Ipod Nano not being recognised by itunes

I have just tried to synch my ipod Nano. itunes did not appear to recognise it.

I was doing a clear up on my pc recently and was advised to remove Bonjour. I now wonder if this was needed for connecting my ipod to my own pc? I thought it was just for networking but perhaps not?

If i have no option but to reinstall iplayer, is there any way to make sure i do not lose my library of music. I would never be able to replace all that I have on there?

If Bonjour is needed could it be downloaded without doing a full reinstall of iplayer?

Help please? :(

iPlayer is the BBC's online player, and it's nothing to do with iTunes.

It might help to know what symptoms, error messages, or dialogue boxes were apparent (if any) when iTunes didn't recognise the Nano.

How did you load the music to iTunes in the first place? Did you load it from CDs? If so, then surely most if not all of them can be merely re-loaded if you do lose the library.

I couldn't have put it in better words.

Why do people buy this iCrap ;) Whenever I bought a MP3 player I always made sure that there is an easy way to copy my music in both directions on any OS.

So now that these others have had a go at you, here's the advice you wanted.

Firstly, have a look in your "my music" folder. There should be a subfolder called "iTunes". In there, you should find all the music that you have bought from iTunes, provided you purchased it through iTunes itself. I presume, as you have a nano, that you didn't buy anything through the iPod!!

What you want to do is COPY this file somewhere else. Leave the original behind, but set up a file called "Backup" (perhaps in My Documents) and shove the copy in there. That way, you know you've got a copy of everything.

Secondly, you are going to need Bonjour. I'm just going onto the Apple Website to have a look and see if there is an easy way to instal it, but will post back.

In the meantime, ignore the unhelpful duo above and get on with copying the iTunes folder. Also, post here if there's anything on your iPod that isn't in your iTunes.

Here is your help page from Apple (clicky). It may be worth checking your iTunes to see if you have the latest version first (open iTunes, click on "Help" and "Check for updates") as this may fix the problem and re-instal Bonjour anyway.

Hello Oscar and thank you so much.

I have friends turning up for a meal shortly so will have to have a look at your posts tomorrow. Please can you bear with me and I will be back online tomorrow to try what you have posted? The checking for updates idea sounds promising. Fingers crossed.

In answer to some of the above posts. Some I have downloaded from cds. Some I have purchased from itunes and yes, I got it wrong, itunes and not iplayer.

    I have now -

created a Backup Folder in My Documents - this is everything, not just purchased music and videos and games - also all the stuff from my own CDs

Downloaded the newest version of itunes and quicktime (looked as though it was loading or updating Bonjour at one point)

    Restarted pc

Tried to synch again - still does not see my ipod

Assume I now have to look at reinstalling - scared novice

Do I have to first remove the current itunes? If so, how?

To reinstall do I go to Apple and Download/ Register anew?

Once I reinstall itunes - how do I get my Backup folder into it?

Your help much appreciated here as scared to death of all this :)

PS When I first went into itunes earlier this evening I did see a message to the effect that Bonjour was missing.

Well, this seems to have eliminated the absence of Bonjeur as the cause; however, you seem to be assuming iTunes to be the culprit, whereas .....

Is your PC recognising the iPod as an external device?

Can you see it in My Computer or Computer? Alternatively, can you see it in Control Panel, Admin Tools, Disk Management?

If the PC generally can't recognise it when connected, then iTunes itself will have no chance..... and no amount of re-installing will help that.

I have a 'reset' key combination for my iPod Classic, which sometimes clears issues similar to this, there's maybe a similar combo for the Nano - you might want to google 'reset ipod nano' or similar .....

Alternatively, there's PLENTY of iPod, iTunes and Apple-specific forums out there. Perhaps one or more of these may be better placed for a definitive answer......?

    Huh?

Apart from pointing out the iplayer bit, I asked two relevant questions of the OP. What's unhelpful about asking for more info?

    Hi Googler

After burning the midnight oil last night I am now back and trying again.

My ipod is not being recognised at all. No "ding" as usual when connected and it does not appear under My Computer

Looked in Add/Delete Programs and Bonjour is back in situ so thank you Oscar for that.

Will now look into the reset procedure.

Wierd thing is that my ipod is not being recognised, nor is my husbands which he uses with a seperate identity under his own username on my PC. When he tried he got the same error message about missing Bonjour and the need to reinstall it.

That to me suggests that it is not an ipod problem. Trying to locate spare cable but can't at the moment. Organised as ever :o

The fact that I did a tidy up on my PC suggests to me that it is linked to something I did there. All done with the help of someone on Tech Forum Guys who seemed very clued up so I had no reason to doubt his advice. He did however tell me to remove Bonjour and as I did not know what it was at that stage I took it to be something of no value.

Will try reset but does anyone have any further ideas for me to try if that does not work?

Do you have any other USB devices that you can connect, to make sure that your PC's USB ports are actually functioning?

Note also there's a difference between RESET and RESTORE - the former leaves your tunes untouched, the latter wipes them all from the iPod so that you have to re-sync.
