Im so angry at the moment.
My partner has Cystic Fibrosis and has suffered with severe agroaphobia for the past 2 years. He cant leave the house without have a panic attack and being physically sick. He is unable to work because of this.
My partner currently gets nearly £80 per month. I work full time and clear around about £950 - £1000 per month.
I have had rent arrears in the past so my rent each month is sitting at £273 and council tax is £80.
After paying for my car, electric and coal for our fire we have barely enough to live on.
After some calculations with an advisor at my local council I found out that I am taking in less that what my monthly expenses are.
My partner is currently trying for Employment and Support Allowance. We have just found out that because he has not paid enough national Insurance Contributions is cannot get any benefit. They said they could try for income based but that I earn enough!!
How can I support both of us on my wage. I am too young for working Tax credits. I was asked if I could struggle on for another 2 years until I was old enough. I honestly feel I cant.
I have tried to find out if I would be bette off not working at all because I would get my rent and Council tax paid for me...
Anyone got any advice for me or is any one in a similar situation...
Please help
Jenna

Does he have care and /or mobility needs? If so, does he claim disability living allowance? (if he's under 65)

If you resign from your job you would probably not receive JSA as there would be a sanction for up to 26 weeks.0 -
why does he only get £80 a month? That seems really low?
Have you tried a Benefit checker to tell you what your entitled to?
He is entitled to claim Income based Employment Support Allowance but this is reduced depending on the household income.
But it has all the disability add-on's. There are also different rates for under 25's (which I assume you are).
I've never understood what difference age makes - we all eat the same, we all need the same heating etc -
you don't get cheaper bills cause your under 25!0 -
Do you need your car? Think about how much you will save on insurance, petrol etc0

You are fortunate that you rent is so low (£273 pm including arrears!) and also your council tax. It seems as if you nearly £700 pm to live on after paying for rent and CT which, without being a fortune, seems perfectly adequate and more than you would get as a couple on benefits.
Why not have a look at the DFW and Old Style Boards on here and look at ways you can cut down your outgoings, as this seems to be your major problem.0 -
You should have between £600 and £700 left after rent and council tax each month.
For two of you, that is quite a lot.
If you post a SOA you may get some useful suggestions for cutting back a bit.0 -

Lol great minds eh?:D0 -
I dont have £700 to live off a month. My partner has to pay for all his prescriptions. Due to his CF he is regularly having to get repeat prescriptions. My rent is £270 as I said, council tax is about £80. We only have a coal fire for heating which is fine in summer but in winter it costs a fortune. Again due to my partners illness he has to have a high calorie diet and has to eat often therefore we go through more food than an average couple.
In reference to karenx - yes I do need my car. I live ina rural village and need a car incase I need to take my partner to hospital. I need my car for work as I am a home care worker.
We need the phone for emergencies and then on top of all that we have electric, TV licence and Hire Purchase for my sofa which I know isnt an essential but at the time I ordered it I was earning a good wage and it is only £28 per month.
This is due to finish shortly though.
In reference to sh1305 My partner does get DLA but he is only entitled to £75 per month.0 -

I'm not sure what it's called but theres some sort of prescription payment plan type thing you can getstill with me?
You just pay a set amount each month and can get all your prescriptions without forking out each time for them
It works out much cheaper
As for the £700 odd squid left over after rent and CT i would really recommend posting an SOA
I'm sure theres space for considerable cut backs in your budget!Future Mrs Gerard Butler
