I'm merging the most recent enquiry into our older 'bottle tops' thread.

  • I am currently saving bottle tops for a neighbour, who is saving them for a wheelchair for somebody she knows. I know it takes a long time, but it's worth doing as it takes little effort and it is for a good cause.

If I wasn't saving them for this, I can just keep the tops on the bottles - my council collects all types of plastic bottles, complete with tops (including washing up liquid, shower gel and othe oddly shaped tops).

Regarding wheelchairs, my son, who has learning difficulties as well as physical disabilities, was referred to the Wheelchair Assessment Unit at the local hospital. He was offered a choice of a manual wheelchair or one with electric controls . Just imagine the danger he would put himself and everyone else in
  • our school is collecting only green milk bottle tops for the gteat noeth air ambulance, all i know is it got a small mention on the school newsletter and my daughter seems to think they get 1p for every top, they have a bug collection of them at school already.
This seems too good to be true as i have searched for ages to find a recipient for tops since the other recipient of my tops achieved their wheelchair, i cannot find any reference to this on any website.

  • Does anybody know of any organisation in Northern Ireland that will take bottle tops.

There are no wheelchairs for bottletops. This is a very long running myth. Google the words 'wheelchair' 'bottle tops' 'hoax' and read all about it.

Milk bottle tops are worth 5p per kilogram so this is not an effective way to raise money for charity.

Does anyone know of any charities collecting plastic lids in the Glasgow or Ayrshire areas? My husband's office were collecting them for a little boy who needed a new wheelchair, the target has not been reached for this little boy but we have 2 carrier bags full of lids. Would rather give them to a charity than just put them in the recycle bin.

  • I've also saved loads of various plastic bottle tops for a friend...for a charity wheelchair. I've got loads left over. I'm in the Suffolk are may be able to get them to areas close by to Suffolk, Upminster & Stoke-On-Trent.
It took a lot of effort to save them and don't want them wasted.

Why does it only seem to be people needing wheelchairs who are collecting the tops? I used to work at our Student's Union bar which had a small Starbucks unit at the end and we saved the tops of the milk bottles too, someone said it was for some charity or other (can't remember now). You'd be surprised how many we managed to collect in the space of a week, I imagine if the proper Starbucks/Nero/Costa etc shops all did this they would actually be able to raise quite a lot. If might be slow otherwise, but if it's something that's just going to get chucked in the bin then I don't see what the problem with cashing them in is, it's money for nothing essentially.
D'you know, in 900 years of space and time, I've never met anyone who wasn't important

There are NO wheelchairs for bottle tops. This is a myth. No one has ever received a wheelchair by collecting bottle tops.

Plastic bottle tops are worth 5p per kilo delivered to the recycler. If you consider transport costs this is not an effective way to raise money for charity.
  • Could fundraisers not look at other recyclable materials with a higher market value, such as aluminum cans, foil etc?

Current market prices that may be paid for collected materials may be found at:

But please don't take out the copper cables from your local electricity sub-station: it's not worth it!
