Oven won't get hot - help please

Hi,
We have a built-in oven, with a main fan oven, and above it a small oven/grill. 2 days ago, one of our fuses tripped and a lot of electrical items (TV, microwave, laptop) went off. We had no idea what had tripped it so turned the fuse back on and everything seemed ok.
At the time our main oven had been on, and 10 mins later we turned it off and dished up tea BUT I did notice that the oven seemed a little cool considering it had been on for over half an hour.
The next day (yesterday), turned on the oven for tea, but it wouldn't get hot. The light and fan inside the oven come on, but absolutely no heat. The mini-oven and grill section above the main oven still works.
Has anyone got any idea as to what has happened, I am hoping it is something we can easily fix ourselves.
Thanks everyone.

sounds like an element, if the replacements are cheap for your oven, it may be worth trying that first. However if the element has blown, there could be an underlying problem with the circuit - that's probably why it tripped.0

same thing happened to mine, the fuse tripped when the element blew, bought one for £30 off these people

turned up the next day, took 10 minutes to fit (it's on the bottom of the outer casing of the oven) after removing the 4 screws down the front of the oven on each side that hold it inEx forum ambassador

Thanks both for your replies. Speedy Spares didn't have our element, but have found one online at another shop for £21 so have ordered.
Hopefully there is nothing serious which caused the element to blow, but I would rather pay £21 to try a cheap and easy fix first, rather than potentially pay out quite a lot for someone to come and look at it...bit of a gamble but I'm going to give it a try.
Will let you know how I get on. Thanks again0 -
About two weeks ago I put a pizza in the oven to cook, turned it on and it tripped along with a few other electrical items. It is definately the oven, how do I know if it is the element or something else??? It is a fan oven by the way?0

Is the fan / light still working? If yes then element - take it out and have a look it's usually fairly obvious if it's gone!I'm mad!!!! :rotfl::jand celebrating everyday every year!!!0

The same happens to ours each time we "trip" .........all we have to do is reset the clock and it heats up again! If we do not reset the clock then it will not work at all.I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes0

Sounds as though it's defaulting to 'auto'? I manage to do that every time the clocks change. Can't be bothered to get the manual out .. but never can remember which 2 of the 6 buttons you have to hold in at the same time .. and manage to put it on 'auto' .. when nothing works. Then have to get the book out, to clear it ....:rolleyes:If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

As other posts .. it's more than likely the element. But you would have been better to check that (it normally shows a burn / fragmentation mark in one area) before ordering a new one.
It fits into a ceramic connector block and you normally have to 'spring' it's legs in before tightening the screws.
BUT ... do turn it off at (it's a double oven .. so must have one) the double pole switch on the wall / in the cupboard .. first. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has replied. Thanks to your help, I have ordered a replacement element and this has fixed the problem
The old element didn't look as though anything was wrong with it, but as soon as we fitted the new one the oven began working again. So thanks to your advice we have avoided paying a costly call out fee from an engineer, thank you!0 -
I've read the previous threads and was worried that the element had broken when my oven blew a fuse. It wasn't heating up on the fan setting, although the fan itself and the light were working. I then switched to the grill setting to see if the element was working - and I burnt my finger  so the element obviously works!
Would appreciate it if anyone has any ideas why it won't heat up using the fan setting only?0
