Cost of home heating oil coming down

    By Keith Bourke

While gas prices are on the rise the cost of home heating oil is falling.

Oil prices soared last year in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and again during the summer amid concerns Iran could disrupt supplies if UN sanctions were imposed over its nuclear programme.

However, the price of crude oil has now dipped below $60 a barrel for the first time in six months, with the cost of home heating oil falling accordingly.

It has been predicted that the heating bill for householders could remain unseasonably low this winter.

A quick survey of four home heating oil suppliers in the Belfast area yesterday came up with an average cost for 900 litres of £288.

A year ago the price was more like £388 and it has fallen by around £50 in the last month.

Cawoods was charging £297 for 900 litres yesterday.

Last month the bill was around £340 for the same amount.

Molloy’s on the Falls Road in west Belfast was charging £285 for 900 litres, down £20 in just a day and falling from £335 last month.

Economy Fuels said customers buying 900 litres of heating oil from them would also pay £285.

Black Diamond Fuels in north Belfast was offering 900 litres at £284 yesterday, down £46 in the last month.

They said they also expected the price to come down further in the next couple of weeks.
  • Yeah I have enough oil to do me a few weeks so I'm gonna hold off as well and hope it comes down

Interesting article that - not sure who keeps their records or whether its just a feel good story but last October we paid £320 (was £330 in April 05) which was our most expensive 900 ltrs in 11 years.

Hopefully it'll continue to slide over the next 4/5 weeks.

Got a quote from Connors this morning 900lt £302 I told the lady I got a price from Hayes for £274 she asked when I got my quote and I said yesterday. She told me the price of oil had gome up late yesterday afternoon (I didnt quite believe that) and that her best price would be £285 so I hesitated a bit and she then said we could match price Hayes but that is the best we can do. So 900lt £274 Im happy.

On a point of principle I always give the order to the person that gave me the lowest quote first... in this case if Connors would not beat hayes then i would have given the order to hayes.... but thats just me :-)
I used to have a signature with links to the League Tables for good/bad shipping charges for Northern Ireland. But I have since learnt that this is against site rules - so they are no longer here! PM me if you need them
