Thats an old wives tale
Lowering the boiler temp reduces its efficiency and costs more to run. Lowering the room thermostat will reduce bills but make the house colder.0 -
I am not sure about the exact savings found in altering thermostats, i have heard it is approx 10% per ten degrees on the boiler itself or 10% per one degree if you have a room thermostat. but it probably depends on a number of things, radiator size, house size, boiler efficiency etc. you'll see soon enough yourself anyway. i had to turn my boiler up a good lot this winter as my lodger was moanign and noticed the oil disappear a *lot* faster than before.
my rationale behind having the hotpress cylinder at the same temp or below the boiler temp is that the hot water is going to be at a max of 60 degrees (or what ever you set it to). so if you have the cylinder stat set to higher it's going to be constantly suckign in hot water to try and up the temperature. therefore your boiler will have to be on more. it may be flawed logic as i am no plumber/heating engineer!0 -
I was told by a plumber that setting the thermostat below a certain temperature was a bad idea (and no, he wasn't trying to get money out of me at the time, it was a friend of my dads!). The only thing is, I can't remember what the temperature was....
anyway, he said the same as a previous poster here, that it was about efficiency, and apparently the hotter the water the better it circulates through the radiators or something (but don't quote me on that, I know less than nothing about how radiators work). Anyway, he also reckoned that for this reason, you were more likely to get a sort of build up of sludgy, dirty water in the bottom of your radiators, which would in time cause them to rust through, leak, and need replaced. The expert advice that I got was to run them a bit hotter but for a shorter length of time.....0 -
THANKS for all the responses! Just looked and the thermostat in the hotpress is set at 90 degrees and the oil burner thermostat is at 75 degrees. Does this mean I should turn the thermostat in the hotpress to 75 degrees to match the burner?0
