My mum lives in a nice rural place and seems to be getting a fair few powercuts. She is rather mature and a little forgetful.
All the torches in the house are broken cos the batteries leaked and the idea of her with candles fills me with fear, so I thought I could buy her a few wind-up torches for around the house so at least she will be able to find her way around the house a bit.
So where can i find the cheapest any ideas??Proud to be sorting my life out!

Woolies sell them for around £5 and have seen them in Boyes for around £4, also Robert Dyas for £5

you can also get lanterns for about £100 -
I've got the same one as the link above, had a cheaper one before and it just fell apart, complete waste of money.
Its not badly made and is just about bright enough. However my NDN has a 5 LED wind up torch and its much brighter, for a older person I would go for one of those, they are more expensive though I presume.
Never seen a lantern, but was thinking about getting one myself a while ago.
I would like to hear of any experiences with them.“Pleasure of love lasts but a moment, pain of love lasts a lifetime.”0 -
Bought mine from Wilkinson in the autumn about a fiver, nice bright light, I keep it in the car as every time I need a torch I found the batteries had gone flat. Does take a bit of time to wind it up initially, I think it was about ten minutes, which seems a very long time but after that just a few winds keeps it going.0

what about a sunjar - expensive but doesn't need to be wound and easy to find in the dark!

Why not build your own - it's easy.
Heres some instructions

I bought a jar from a bootfair & a solar light from Poundland.

I bought a wind-up lantern with LED thingies and it's useless. It gives off a nice enough 'glow', but it doesn't provide me with enough light to do anything. I only found this out when there was a powercut.
Presumably your mother wants something that will actually allow her to walk around in the dark, find switches, not fall over things and so on. If that's the case, then don't go for something like a sunjar - it's just a glowing nightlite.

Netto have a wind up torch and a wind up radio for £4.99 each. Also a pretty specced up camping lantern for £12.99 12 LED, AM/FM Radio, Hand Crank or AC input, Night Light, Compass, Siren, 3 LED Emergency Light. Plenty in stock at my local Netto when I went yesterday but that's because it doesn't have a kitchen sink...........The man without a signature.0
